I recently bought a 5 year old ISH, he was broken in and just thrown out in a field so needs bringing on. I haven't ridden him yet due to med fever and no correct fitting tack, when the mud fever cures what can I do to bring him on and get him more confident and used of things?

Tack that fits???

Get back/teeth checked to make sure all ok, walk him out in hand, in the school past scary things/over poles

Some long reining in his correctly fitted tack will help you get some idea of his attitude to work. Basic ground work is a good idea too, teaching 'move over' buttons will help with flexion and bend, and will come in handy for lateral work later on. Teaching leg yield will be very important for when you're hacking too, and its stuff you can start doing now in-hand, whilst you're waiting to get his tack fitted. x

Did you break him in?
How long was he in work before being turned away?
How long has he been turned away?
If it was someone else unknown to you, I would start from scratch taking nothing for granted, just to make sure all lessons have been learnt and prevent any nasty surprices.
Dito if he was in work less than 8 weeks, dito if hes been turnout for more than 6 months.
Going over all the ground work again won't hurt and it will help get him fit for ridden work.
Then when his tack is sorted you can have fun knowing he's well started.:)
