Advice needed please on Sarcoids

Yes- my 7yo bay TB gelding has a couple of his belly (flat, 5pence sized) and has previously had one removed. They dont cause him any problem, i just keep an eye on them (one in particular that is in his girth area but doesnt bother him).

The one he'd had removed was on his belly, but jst in front of his sheath. (this was before i had him). He apparently had a bit of a wound there but it has completely healed now and you wouldnt know that he'd had anything done.

I guess it depends how many and how large they are? I think they all differ in terms of growth rate, but are simple enough to remove. Ive also heard a lot of people recommend Thuja ointment (homeopathic) although ive never used it.

They can be unsightly, but if the horse is right in every other way then i dont think i would be put off by them!

If they were any where near anywhere tack or rugs (back leg straps) might go then no.

If they were 'new' then no.

If somewhere unobtrusive and they had been there years without growing loads/ multiplying then I'd consider it but at a discounted price to reflect the fact they could cause a problem in the future and any insurance company will exclude them (and probably try to exclude other skin conditions!)

If they were large enough to have been tied off I would be wary - they can return in many forms, some of which can be very malignant and fast growing.:( Def at a reduced price, and probably walk away, there are a lot of horses for sale without sarcoids.

As i mentioned i have one in the girth area (just infront of it but it can occasionally get rubbed) and it doesnt bother the horse, and it hasn't grown/changed shape in well over 2 years. (but admit- it may do in the future).

I am also still covered on my insurance policy. (NFU)

I would rather have a horse who was good at his job but had sarcoids rather than one that wasn't but didnt have them! Its personal choice though, and yes they may cause him a problem at some point in the future- but what horse doesnt have health problems at some point.

My lad had 1 tied and 4 cryosprayed on his sheath and inner thigh. Im happy that they wont be an issue but i would be wary buying with them. It does get noted on the vetting.

I'm surprised NFU will still cover this if the horse has had them for over 2 years. As soon as the renewal is up they'd exclude surely?

I bought a young horse with sarcoids last year. I agonized over whether to get him.

I've dealt with them by feeding good quality food and global herbs sarcx and after speaking to a homeopathic vet applying thuja cream and feeding thuja. Most of his have gone now but there's always a risk they can return.

You could buy a horse without sarcoids for him to later get them...but if you're the worrying type try and weigh up if you can live with the risk.

If he's what you're looking for consider it carefully but don't rule him out!

Bought a horse that developed several sarcoids a few months later, were treated with Liverpool cream & bcg in his eye one, they were nearly gone after a year. Sadly he then had a major illness & was pts age 7, I believe this was linked to the reason he developed sarcoids, but never pushed the vet to discuss as if he linked it to the sarcoids insurance would not have covered me as they were by then an exclusion.
So no would not buy a horse with sarcoids as I would be worried about the underlying reason they developed.
