Morning, new member signing on for the 1st time and really hoping you can help. I have recently bought a horse, beautiful 9yr old mare, after being horseless for the last 6 years!! She was advertised as kind and easy to do, but she isn't. She is definitely the boss in this relationship, so far. The person I bought her from has, in fairness, agreed to exchange her when she finds something more suitable, but that may take a while and I have said I will keep her until such time. She is kept at DIY livery on 24 hr turnout so I don't have to do too much if I'm feeling threatened, it's a very small yard, so help is limited. What I need to know, is how do I assert my authority, safely, show I'm in charge, without bullying her and turning her into a nervous wreck. The main issues are on the ground, she tries to bite whilst being led and if she doesn't want to co operate she will rear and kick out whilst running away from me. Once loose, she will run at me with ears pinned. I'm sure it's a respect thing, she has none! and with the new environment, settling in, plus lush grass and her hormones it's a bit of a war zone at the moment. Although I may not be keeping her, I think I should be working with her from the ground for her own sake. She's not too bad when ridden, but has a few issues with traffic and not wanting to go forward, maybe it's all connected?
