Advice needed please (warning: long but pleeeeeaaaase read)

when aran had an allergic reaction to baytril has mouth and tongue were really sore for a good 24-48 hrs and he found it really hard to eat/drink - he just stood looking very sad. he also had saliva dribbling out of his mouth.
hope she feels better soon and you find the cause.
 
Oddly enough I had quite a similar situation a few years ago with a horse. The difference is that it looked incredibly well, but just couldnt eat. The enthusiasm was there and she would open her mouth but the food just dropped straight out again. It was like her mouth was paralysed. She would grab at grass as well and it would just fall out again. the same with drink. Even extra strong mints. She was desperate! I had the vet out and he was completely baffled. It went on for about 72 hours and then suddenly she was eating again like nothing had ever been the problem. It never happened again - hopefully you will find the same happens!! Good luck
 

thank you, thats very encouraging. Was feeling a bit more hopeful but have just called in again and there is no real improvement, although she has had another wee.

Was hoping the drugs would have perked her up a little more than this

Kibob, I would have thought she would be picking up by now yo if the medication was helping, how long did the vet say it would take? Or is it a question of how long is a piece of string?

I agree - I would be very unhappy now and would want the mare receiving some more intensive treatment.
 
I agree... two lot of antihistimine have been adminstered now. I would expect to see more of an improvement at this stage.

Is there another vet you could get a 2nd opinion from? I know it is an awful situation, but I would just be a little concerned that my own vet had not given the pony more intensive treatment.
 
Hi all. The vet has been again and taken blood for testing. He still thinks that these things take time and he has known this go on for a couple of days. She is comfortable, has no colic signs, so she isn't restless, pawing the ground, getting up and lying down. she is just stood quietly resting. We feel it will be too stressful for her to pump her with liquid paraffin and don't really feel it will do any good as she is showing no signs of stomach pain.

she's still not eating or drinking but is taking the water from the syringe well now and has had over a litre today. she is also weeing now and isn't showing any signs of dehydration.

she's not got any worse and has improved slightly. she has been wandering around her stable a little tonight and I have seen her having a scratch - all positive signs I hope.

Blood results come back in the morning and if these are inconclusive she will likely go to the surgery for further tests.

we are doing everything possible for her, I am typing a summary of each vet visit but believe me I am going over each and every case senario with them and am happy that everything possible is being done for her.

Bonzabean - haven't got hold of RM yet, no answer this afternoon. Will try again first thing (do you think it would be too cheeky to try him in the evening??).

Hi guys, well she is a little brighter this morning, but unfortunately the blood tests have shown significant liver damage. The vets seem to thing it is long term liver damage which has been building up for some time but they cannot be certain without trying a biopsy - which I am not prepared to put her through.

Last ditch attempt today, we have given her steroids, if she responds to these then there is a chance that she can lead a comfy life with the help of steroids. If she doesn't pick up at all, or gets worse, then she will have to be PTS.

She is looking happier, and has been swallowing down her water with electrolytes - yesterday she wouldn't swallow much and I was syringing the water straight down her throat.

She is a little fighter and I'm praying that she continues to do so, but I'm afraid, in reality, it isn't looking very hopeful.

Oh Kibob, I am so so sorry to hear that, I really hoped that as she was showing some signs of improving it was only a short term issue.

The liver is a hard one to crack, but will keep my fingers crossed anyway.
 
How devastating. Please, Please, Please insist that they put her on an intravenous drip today to get fluids in to her. Her kidneys and other organs will start to shut down otherwise.

We sadly had to have out little pony PTS this morning. There was no improvement and she had fought all she could.

She will be dearly missed - RIP little girl.
 

Thanks everyone, this forum has been a great support - a very sad day but a relief that she is no longer suffering.
