Ok so i'll start with a bit of history for those of you that don't know.
I bought Alee when she was 2 1/2. I had never planned on buying a youngster but I wanted the best my money could buy and felt that this was my only option. I had never planned on backing her myself as although I am quite experienced after a fall 5 years ago I can get a little nervous.
Well Alee was 4 in June and I backed her myself at the end of last summer as she was so laid back. I had lots of help from experienced friends and a good instructor. Just after I bought her I sent her away for some ground work and she came back a million times better and I was so much more confident with handling her.
Just recently we were getting along fab and had started hacking out with no issues, Alee can be alittle quirky sometimes. Unfortunatly 4 weeks ago she went lame and was diagnosed with counter rotated pedal bones, she had her remedial shoes fitted on friday and I was advised by the vet to begin walking her out.
I got to the yard this morning feeling more confident than I have ever felt. I always get a bit jittery before hacking ( I am more of a schooling person) but am normally ok once on board. Today was the complete opposite. I was fine until I got on and Alee started being sharp and wouldn't stand and begun chucking her head around kicking out with a back leg. I stupidly jumped off then realising what I had done got back on again. She felt very tense and sharp and just like she was about to explode and this just isn't what she has been like recently.
I took her in the school and lightly lunged her and she was quite good.
Now my problem is that I felt out of control and panicked now this obviously isn't going to do her any good and I think she needs so have some confidence instilled in her.
I am thinking about sending her away, but where to? She went to Jason Webb for her groundwork and I am sure he would take her on again, or should I think about sending ehr for schooling? Although I do feel that once these napping / sharpness issues are sorted I can do the schooling myself.
I really just want someone to have her hacking out in walk trot and canter and doing the same happily in the school so any recommendations would be much appreciated. i wouldnot even mind if it was someone freelance that could come to the yard and do it.
Any advice or ideas much appreciated.....

Can you hack out with someone on a nanny horse? It might give you and your horsey a bit more confidence. If this is not your strongest area then you will most likely be passing on the panic vibes along to her.

Plus if she has had four weeks doing nothing, she is likely to be a little more excitable than before maybe?

Hello, I have found Jason Webb to be very very good for groundwork and his basic schooling (although some of his methods are very very traditional and shall we say, contraversial

!!) but I personally would send her somewhere else to get schooled properly. I am not saying Jason wouldn't do a good job, he taught and trained both me and my pony for polocrosse a few years back and I really do think he is good at what he does but I feel she would benefit from going somewhere else

Whereabout are you in E. Sussex?

I'd get someone to come to you if it's only the napping to get past - might help your confidence to see someone else riding her too

My TBx went through a sharp/nappy naughty stage when she was 4 and that damaged my confidence so I got an instructor to come out. I hired her for an hour and she rode her for the first 30 mins then gave me a lesson for the last 30 mins - it worked really well for us

I always hack out with a nanny hors ealthough I may as well not bother as she takes no notice of them and just marches of in front!!!
I don't really need her schooled just the basics walk trot and canter politly then I can carry on from there. This is why I thought Jason Webb might be a good idea!!!
I would love for someone to come to me but don't know of anyone localy. I am in Polegate nr Eastbourne.

if thats all you want the jason is definately your man - he just broke my 3yo in and he has come back fantastic !! He is having a few months off before going to my dressage instructor at frogpool for 2 weeks in october x

Have you tried Mark Boxall at Preston Farm in Otford Kent, he is just down the road from me, he seems to specialise in quirky horses and has backed and bought on loads of youngsters, I only know him by reputation but have heard nothing but good about him, he is quiet, kind and calm, my vet recommends him too as he does quite a few KS cases for them I believe.

A friend will be asking him to back her foal (now 2!) next year, she has her older retired horse on full livery there and is very positive about him. Might be worth popping down to have a chat, pm me if you want to investigate it further.

Yeh I think you are right. I have just spoken at length to my vet about how much work she should be doing now she has her remedial shoes on. Looks like we are in the school in walk for 4 weeks - that I can manage. Then if all goes well I will think about sending her to Jasons for a couple of weeks before the winter sets in. No point in sending her now if all she can do is walk, hopefully she won't get too bored with the school work though!!!!
