my mum has a greman shep whos rapidly losing weight, she has an airy cough (if u get me!) not really a cough.
she started chewing her tail a while ago, but seems to have stopped. she had been to the vets had a course of anitbiotics as they couldnt find anything wrong and blood tests.
but shes still not right.

shes eating and drinking normally.

anyone had anything like this before?

Yes, age would be useful. Amount of exercise? Feed (brand, amount, regularity of feeding)? Is she picky?

Tail chewing can be a form of OCD or an externalisation of an internal problem.
GSDs can also be prone to pancreatic/food absorbtion problems which could explain the weight loss but the vet should have picked that up if that were the case.

Is her coat condition also bad? Dull?

shes 5. she has butches tins about 1 tin a day with james welbeloved bisucits about a cup full. not a fussy eater.

coat is dull but shes moulting so it usually is. shes walked twice a day. she isnt a long walker she likes to run around then go home.

Does she run up and down at home? Is she quite nervous/energetic? My bitch is hard to keep weight on as she will do laps of her pen. I try to keep her contained in a small space or in an area where she cannot see the things that wind her up (people, cats) and then she gets 2-3 hours serious hillwalking during the day or two sets of running with her brother

Maybe split her meals into two, morning and evening. (Although do not feed for one hour either side of strenuous exercise)

my mum likes her vet, but im bugging her to take the dog back to see him, dont like seeing her sad

thanks for ya help

Sounds like a heart problem to me. And for a 5 year old dog, that's pretty dire....

Back to vet, stamping feet and demanding some action I'd say.

Defiitely back to the vets, preferably a different vets. Could be a number of things, but can't see the point of giving antibiotics when they don't know what is wrong. It might alsobe worth putting some vegetable oil in her feed, mayhelp with her weight and coat.
