Hi all

My boyfriends mom's horse Sox has had laminitis in the past and has to be muzzled through the Summer. He is fed a pinch of happy hoof chaff with laminitis supplement each day.

However, he is dropping weight and looks quite ribby. He is on very good grass though muzzled we do take it off occasionally to give him a break. Is there anything else we can give him?

We tried him on fast fibre but he won't eat it

I would definitely try to find some old , but still good quality , last year's hay if you can and if possible set him up with an outdoor haynet i.e tied to a wooden post some where safe. If he's in a patch on his own this is better still as you can avoid problems with other horses trying to nick it. In the past with my old dartmoor mare i made a " playpen " of a paddock - harrowed the ground so that all the grass roots got ragged up and the set up a haynet post ( one net inside the other restricts gorging even better! ) Long fibre is so much better for lami's as the gut has to work much harder to process the food which in turn uses more calories , if you cant get old hay you could use mark westaways horse hage blue which i'm sure is for lami's. Good luck...

I'd put him on bad grazing or even in the school with ab lib hay. If the hay is really good, have it soaked.

Make sure he is getting the vit and mins he needs, to help him put on the weight as he is muzzled he may not be getting the amount he needs.
Something like Balieys lo-cal can be given to Lami's.

Not sure how long he has it on for, my mare has hers on 24/7 and holds her weight really well (they are both the same breed).

We don't have any bad grazing, it's all lush/good grazing :(

He shares a field with our other 3
