Hi all,
i was looking for some advice regarding my little welsh section a. We had a big problem with him last year where he spent a good few months rearing and bucking every time he was ridden

He has been an angel all summer.

He has started this again, through elimination we have worked out that it is around the same time of year as last year.

He was out 24/7 in summer but he is now stabled overnight (goes out 9-4 ish)

I have been reading about and wondering if he could be lacking in magnesium now the grass has changed etc.

He is fed spillers cool mix whereas last year he was fed happy hoof so i dont think it is his feed and he has haylage overnight.

Could i have your opinions and advice please.
Thanks
Lou

Think its this time of year, getting colder, less turnout, more feed, less exercise etc etc.
My gelding is being a bit of a pain too atm...he usually is over winter for the above reasons imo!

It probably is down to the colder weather, staying in more but have you looked at the amount of starch in cool mix, its 20% that could be enough to send into orbit, there will be a load of sugar in it also but no mention on the website.
I would put him on a fibre based diet, low sugar and starch and see if that helps.
Fast fibre would be far more suitable for a small pony.

Thanks for that advice. Cool mix was recommendedby spillers when I emailed them. I was also recommended leisure mix by Dodson and horrel but they didn't have that when I went the feed shop.

I agree with this. Although I'm not really a fan of A&P feeds. You could look at the Pure Feeds range for low sugar and starch feed. Or even a low calorie chaff such as Dengie Hi-Fi Lite and a balancer like Baileys Lo-Cal or similar.

He has always had haylage as that is all we can get. He also had haylage during the summer when in the box etc so I don't think it is that. Thank u all for the advice any more is always welcome

A lot of ours get fresh at this time of year, if they look a bit sprightly prior to riding, I give them a quick spin on the lunge. If the pony is being mainly ridden by a child, do you have an experienced one who can hop on and try and correct him?
I probably would just be feeding roughage unless he is either very light, or in lots of work.

Thank you. He is ridden by a child my 11 year old daughter. She is not phased by his rearing or anything so I would class her as experienced. He is ridden most days from schooling to hacking to pony club etc
