advice needed pleaseeee - longish sorry

First things first.... i am a fairly novice rider i have only been riding for about a year - when i first started i had a fall and lost alot of confidence but over this year mine and my mums trusty cob has helped me gain this back.

3 months ago i brought a 10yo irish tb mare, she was a bit of a rescue case as she was in a state when i got her, 3 months on and she has improved 100%. Riding wise she is green but willing (we have had our stages where she lives up to the "chestnut mare" sterotype but we seem to have over come this!) i prefer riding in the school (no confidence hacking) my girl being green and young for her age i need ideas to keep her interested as she gets bored easily then can become a bit of a handful!! she can have days where she just isnt interested at all and will pull a face even if i attempt to put my leg on.

Any ideas or advice really appreciated as this mare has a lot of potential (its there somewhere!!) thanks

Well...if you will buy a chestnut mare!!

What about trying some moody mare as a start off, see if that helps at all?

And as far as school work goes, lots of transitions, keep her thinking all the time, don't go the length of the school without doing a transition or a half halt.

Pole work in different parts of the school, even if it's just a few trotting poles.
 
i know im totally mad!! 7/10 she is a sweety though!

She is currently on "Stroppy Mare" and this does seem to have helped with her "strops".

I do lots of transitions and changes of rein and this normally works well.

I was thinking of poles.... and maybe some cones to help her with bending (she currently thinks she is a plank of wood lol!!) - this is if she doesnt freak out at them

Perhaps she is bored and needs the variety of hacking plus the school work. Is there anyone who would hack her out for you? If not is there a sensible rider with a quiet horse who would hack with you?

i think your probably right, i think i will have to give myself a kick up the backside and do it! i will go out with my mum and the trusty cobolob at the weekend and see how she is

last hack i went on was her and 3 other horse.... BAD idea lol!

I would definitely agree that she needs variety and a change of scene regularly. I have to sit at the same boring desk in the same boring office every day, but I don't want my horsey to be stuck doing the same

If you can find someone with a sensible horse to hack out with the first few times I'm sure your confidence will build. have fun!

I'd vary it with ground work, incorporating pole work. Kelly Mark's book Perfect Manners has some great exercises in there that should help.
