Hi guys,

A work colleague has told me about a trailer he is thinking of selling - he is a dead straight bloke no reason to think it will be shoddy in any way - however I am clueless on trailers - do you think its worth going to have a look at.

Hes described it as old but in full working order good floor new tyres plus spare good electrics its a 2 wheeler and not for a large horse he said a large pony size - my mare is a 14.2 MW.

Any ideas on what sort of trailer this might be and if it might be suitable - we would be popping to local shows on and off throughout the year and boxing to ride with friends so not covering alot of miles.

Many thanks guys.

2 wheeler? Never seen one of them. Having 4 wheels makes it a lot more stable & comfortable for the horse. Also I would have thought that the loading would be too high for 2 wheels. If its not a known brand then I'd steer clear. Don't want an illegal or dangerous trailer.

2 wheel as in single axle?. Never seen a single axel horsebox, but it doesn't sound like it was originally intended for horses. Is there a knowledgable friend that can go with you?. Although the floor is very important, you also need to check the bolts and struts that hold the floor on, the condition of the axles, the braking system, the hinges and condition of the ramps etc. Make sure you have a look with the rubber matting lifted and take a torch to have a good look underneath at the floor and metal work. Check the lights and that the the hitch isn't worn and the jockey wheel works. Don't be tempted to buy a cheap heap of junk as a project unless you are very very handy yourself. I almost got caught with that one. Better to save up and buy an older ifor or something, at least you can get all the bits from the manufacturer.

If it's single axel, as in one wheel either side, it is NOT suitable for a horse or pony. If he means two wheeler as in two on either side and four in total, should be fine.

Yeah, you can get perfectly usable 2 wheeled trailers, although I don't think there's many around these days. However, I may well be wrong, but Im sure Ive been told that 2 wheelers are now illegal.
Also, personally, I don't think any pony trailer would be suitable for a middleweight 14.2hh, I would have thought you wrere better with a normal sized one.

Hi guys
Just to update - the trailer was far too low for anything other than a small pony - no go I'm afraid!
