Out livery yard owner got a call today from a local neighbour complaining about horse poo on the road. Whilst it isnt illegal not to pick it up, our YO is considering asking all liveries to go back out and clear up any poo from the estate. I think this is a bit too much personally and wondered if others had similar problems and how they had resolved them??

You know, some people today have nothing better to moan about...they want to live in silence(ie wont tolerate a dog barking or kids playing in their own garden) and now this complaint.
Horses were on the roads well before cars and are an important part of the countryside. They should count themselves very priveleged to live in an area where horses are clip clopping around where they live. Try living in a community where yobs are damaging the area and then they would have something real to moan about. Also it naturally disappears anyway so cant see their point at all.

They should be grateful, collect it up for their gardens - recycle! What a load of tosh, no point, just bored and HAD to complain about something!!

On a country road I think it's ridiculous to expect people to clear up after their horses - if you live in the countryside you can't complain about it! If I was riding through my housing estate though (which I plan to, I want to bring Scooby home to say hello!) I might sweep any "presents" to the side of the road or something - kids play around here and it's not the kind of place you can really excuse a big pile of poo.

I'd suggest if the neighbour has nothing better to do than moan about daft things , then they ought to get shovelling

Ummm, I don't know the situation but a bit of diplomacy might be needed here? Of course its a damn nuisance having to go picking up poo from the roads but I remember from a H&H article some while ago that some councils are getting funny about it and you don't want some complaining old git going to the council and then you HAVE to clear it up.

This is just a suggestion but for what its worth you could offer the keen gardeners on the estate the chance to go to the yard and pick up some "well rotted" manure for free and see how that goes down. At least then you can be said to be trying to be helpful etc and it might just diffuse the situation or go some way towards it.

Its just a thought ....

I had someone running out of his garden and down the road after me one day, another neighbour shouted "dont worry love i'll have it for my roses, can you get your horse to drop one here tomorrow??"

if it was on a pavement then I can understand as we shouldnt really be on there, I certainly wouldnt want to go out for a couple of hours ride then have to go back around the roads clearing up !! shouldnt think you should either even if it is annoying the neighbours.

how long has the yard/ horses been there? or is it new?

tell them they should count themseles lucky as people have to pay for fertilisers they are having theirs for free and delivered straight to their door lol

Horse poo is not like dog poo which is dangerous. Horse poo is perfectly safe because horses are herbivorous/vegetarians.

Some times motorcyclists complain because it can cause them to skid.

It is highly unlikely that the local authorities will take any action at all.

The only places I know where horses have to wear napies is NewYork City and Blackpool and that is only because they are being used to regulalrly pull carrages.

Does the neighbour have a car or even a bicycle?

If so, only because you usually can't see the exhaust gases coming out, it doesn't mean no pollutions are coming out when they drive!

I've also heard that tyres leaves microscopic pieces of themselves behind on the surface of roads, that people then inhale and that is not exactly healthy for us either!

Once had an angry man shout at my friend and i, whilst on our ponies. My pony had poo'ed outside his house in the road and he wanted me to get off and clear it up. Lord knows what with? scoop it up in my hat perhaps

. I can understand non-horsey, non-gardening people not liking it and it annoys me when people leave dog poo on the road, let alone a giant horse poo. But not sure what the answer is.

Some people have nothing better to do than look for something to moan about.

To keep the peace I would prob clean any up around the properties where this person is but I don't believe you have to!!

I think its important to remember in these situations that councils do not have the power to legislate -their duty in this respect is to enforce existing legislation. And there is no legislation requiring horse poo to be picked up. I think to start doing so would create a dangerous precedent and an expectation that it should be picked up and then failure to do so might lead to liability as it would be akin to admitting you had a duty of care. I would also say in this respect if even the police said something similar to me re picking it up to keep the peace I would also refuse.

Horse poo has been around, relatively harmlessly, for centuries. Theres all sorts of undesirable stuff on roads, such as mud, dirt, etc..

Whilst a council can not enforce poo being picked off of the road, it can create huge problems for your YO to carry on running their business.

If you ride through a built up area, and you are a big yard and a lot of you hack out at the weekend, then maybe you can consider that someone cleans up the mess left (bit different if only 3 or 4 horses).

It is not worth going to WW3 over a bit of horse poo, it only takes so many complaints to the council then they can be over your yard with a fine tooth comb and make life very very difficult for the YO.

I think we have to now accept in life that not everyone appreciates horses and it is not worth upsetting the neighbours when a couple of minutes of thoughtfulness helps improve the neighbourhood atmosphere, rather than dig your toes in and say I dont have to can cause a lot of repercussions.

If you really feel that strongly that you shouldnt have to if the YO asks, then for their business maybe look for another yard.
