Brief history, tense back which is better but not there yet, he is under physio for that, a bad fitting saddle which is being sorted out asap, which isn't easy.

The problem he had at first before the physio was unable to select the correct lead leg on the right rein in canter and his right side is far stiffer than his left work, but we feel an improvement, however I have noticed that on the lunge he really struggles on his downward transistion with his right hind more like he stumbles into it, he will go trot to canter to trot to canter fine with correct leg leading its just the downward transition isn't smooth.

He isn't lame, there is no tail swishing and on the lunge no changing of legs in canter. I have just phoned the vet to see if they will come out and look at him, he is 12 so wondering if he is a little arthiritic(sp), but looks fine during the canter , so I'm not sure.

Has any one any thoughts what it could be, I suppose when I've re read this, it could all be related to his poor saddle fitting , but I don't like to see him like this. Also I'm not sure if I should be riding him etc etc, I've borrowed a larger saddle by the way.

I'm keeping an eye on this one cause I have the same problem with mine - chiro man says there isn't much wrong with him and he's a little stiff that's all due to an old poorly fitted saddle (before I bought him) and that I should just work him through the stiffness. Easier said than done though.

AmyMay- I have used my saddle briefly on the lunge, but then stopped, you see I had a saddle fitter out last friday who swore my saddle was fine, I feel the opposite as does my instructer and yard owner, see my post from last Friday.

His ears are not back and doesn't look in pain, I wish he could talk to me.

The vet is coming out tomorrow afternoon, but I have a lesson tomorrow morning which I really want, do I cancel?

Jacksmyboy- its so frustrating isn't it, because apart from this he now works in an outline beautifully both in trot and canter and my instructer says we are ready now to compete as our consistency is there.

I'm glad you have called the vet. I had my horse 10 years and he was very similar on his right hind. At first the vet said it may just be a little arthritus from his previous hunting days. As time went on I enrolled in a dressage school after only two weeks we had to give up as he started to become disunited on his hind legs when ever we tried to get him to lead with his right front. He also started to struggle getting up and he loved lying down and would sit like a dog for a few minutes before trying to get up. Evenually I asked the vet to do x-rays of his right hind as he had also slipped when we were out riding and went down. which was quite frightening as he was 17.1h Hanovarion /Irish Draught. They found His Sacral joint had a very old injury and was told never to ride him again. He was retired for 2 years before he was unable to get up again. I then has to have him put to sleep.

I would get a second opinion re the saddle fitting, we had a pony on our yard who completely changed due to an ill fitting saddle fitted by a master saddler! they saddler came back admitted it looked wrong but blamed the fact that the 5.5 stone rider was too heaving for the 11.3hh welsh section A! sent the poor girl into tears!

Yes I have someone else coming out on the 16th which seems ages away, but will see carry on with the vet if not just for my own piece of mind.
