(sorry this could be a long one as we really no nothing about this!!)

We have a little ex JA pony mare that we have been trying to sell for sometime, this week we have been given an offer from a well respected SJ stud to have her as a broodmare on loan. This would be an ideal solution if they wanted to buy her but at the minute they are in no position to buy, so they would have her on loan at least to start with, and then possibly buy her if she threw a good foal.

Question is, what would we get out of sending her to stud other than having her off out hands for a year or two?? It was their idea to have her not ours so its not going to be our foal - if you see what i mean , but would be get a small ownership of the foal?? (i know these are questions that we need to ask them but i wondered whether any of you had any experience with this type of thing).

What type of contract would you keep with a stud, as to having her on loan with a view in the long term of buying her??

Many thanks

I think this might need specialist advise due to the added situation of her possibly breeding a foal. Look really carefully at your insurance for her as well as if, heaven forbid, there where to be some sort of dreadful complication to the pregnancy or during birth you would need to know exactly where you stand re vets and possibly death of the mare or the foal.

Sorry to make it all sound doom and gloom but there are always risks breeding and the last thing you need is to find yourself in some sort of dispute should something horrid happen.
