Apologies in advance if this is a long one, but really need some opinions!!

I keep my two on DIY livery on what is an otherwise mostly full livery yard, but for quite a long time have not been very happy there; silly things really but have niggled on for about 18 months now:

- The DIYers got chucked in a field a rather long way away from yard back in the autumn (takes me 15/20 mins to get there and back and up a really big hill). Said field has no running water so you need to bucket it halfway up the hill - I am the only one who bothers even though share the field. The other night I went to top up the water to find that the trough i fill it up from was bone dry, there are horses in this field. The pipes had been changed around at the bottom and i could not get the water to come out at all so have had to bucket the whole way up which was not fun and practically killed me!! To get to the field you have to lead the horses through another field full of horses which invariably ends up in chaos and hooves flying everywhere.

- We have to use 'yard farrier' - i recently found out he is not even a registered farrier (i wasnt surprised as have never been happy with his work). Their feet were done on weds and when i got down there that evening and looked at them, my gelding's feet (he is unshod) looked like they hadnt even been trimmed! He has either a) not trimmed them, or b) run a rasp around the edges of his feet and that really is it! There have been a few occaisons before when i have wondered whether he was actually done but just paid up but now i am absolutely fuming as like i said he has either not done them at all or done the most appalling job. I cant say anything to him/question him though - dont really want to psot on public forum why just in case!!

- I have lost count of the amount of times my hay has been used - when questioning YO tactfully about this she flatly denies it even though her staff have admitted using the hay!! So i still end up paying for what i havent even used. Not to mention all my stuff walking off - daft like buckets, haynets, whips etc but so irritating when you have to go out and buy new ones!

- The guard dogs LOVE jumping up at the horses as you are leading them in (think lion jumping on zebra's wither/neck to bring it down and you have it spot on!!) to the point where my Mare is now ridiculously viscious towards dogs.

Anyhow, i have been looking for about a year for somewhere else as after we bought our first house this yard is now 6.5 miles away plus i've never been that happy there. I have finally found somewhere and am thinking i want to go for it, but its quite a big decision and want to make sure i make the right one!!

Pros:

- takes me the same time to get there (but it is 8 miles away now....)
- XC jumps on site
- Oldencraig EC is 'hackable' as are other shows/hunter trials - i dont have my own transport right now and have not been able to go anywhere at all as a result - riding 5 mare really needs to get out and about!
- i can bed on straw and therefore save some ££ not bedding on shavings (we have to use shavings at present)
- i can use whatever Farrier i like

!!
- i just liked the yard, it was on a farm but nice and tidy and just felt good (yard right now its a bit of a dump TBH considering)

cons:

- it is further away when i could do with saving money on petrol
- no horsewalker (we have one at present yard)
- only has the one school (which is indoor floodlit), where i am now it has 3, 1 which has jumps in (the indoor though is terrible and thats the only place for me to ride during week in winter, this one does look better)
- its not on BF's way home from work and he does drop in and do them for me occaisonally (maybe once every couple of weeks) or if i go away for work.

So really just after people's thoughts - i'm quite worried i may be jumping out of the frying pan, into the fire - this is the first place i ahve managed to find in a year and i dont want to go for the first place i see, yet i may not find anywhere else for another year! Overall its going to cost me an extra £1.50 a week although he did say i could possibly pay less for one of them during the summer as he would be out 24/7 so that potential cost saving could cover the extra petrol.

Never mind cookies for getting this far, probably need something a bit stronger

I would be moving as soon as possible I'm afraid. A yard that has no proper watering system, dangerous dogs, and MAKES you use an unregistered farrier is not a place I'd want my horse to be, regardless of facilities.

Sorry to be so blunt.

Dont be sorry for being blunt - I've been thinking this for ages but have kind of felt stuck (as couldnt find anywhere else hence postings on here as part of my hunt) and not able to discuss issues with YO - lets just say anyone else who has left the very same day....

I was going to call new yard tomo and double check fields do have running water (as forgot to ask) and say yep i'd love to come!!

I miss keeping them at home with parents - everything was just so!

I'd move - in fact new place sounds very nice, I'd love an indoor school. If your horse and you are not happy then it doesn't matter how great the facilities are at your present yard (although they don't sound that great!). I don't see your cons as being that bad a (did you have to scrape the barrel for those

) and cross country on site sounds good...I'm just getting jealous now so I'll stop. If in doubt could you not say you were putting your horse on some kind of schooling livery if anyone asked, move horse to new yard and pay for both places for a month to see if you liked it, that's what I'd do.

good idea - fingers crossed you'll get moved soon and not have to lug water about & dodge the dogs! Good luck.

I'd have thought that there would have been alot of liveries around Kent? I think I'd have asked if anyone on here in your area knew of a livery yard they would recommend (or maybe you have and I missed your post)?

Does the man who does your horses hoof's actually shoe other horses? If so when I's left I would report him. Unless your a trained farrier you can only do your own horses not anyone else's and certainly not for money. How much does he charge you for trimming their feet?

I'd move.

You don't need a horsewalker if your horses go out.
Having a school of any sort is fantastic
8 miles isn't much further than 6.5m.
Costs about the same too.

I know what you mean though, it's a big decision to make a move.

Can you afford as someone else said, to try it out for a couple of weeks and then if all OK, hand your notice in at the other place?

Move!
I could not have a 20 min walk n the dark to bring horses in in winter or turn out on winter mornings.
Nor carry water. If not near running, they should at least take a bowser up there.
Sounds as if they don't really want any DIY-ers

MOVE! It is always a bit of a stonach churner to change major things in life and make these decisions but in your heart you must know your present yard is inadequate (putting it mildly) or you would not have looked! Good luck in whatever you decide. xx

Under the Farriers Registration Act, other than barefoot trimming it is illegal for anyone who is not a registered farrier, apprentice or vet to carry out any farriery. This is defined in the Acts as:

”any work in connection with the preparation or treatment of the foot of the horse for the immediate reception of a shoe thereon, the fitting by nailing or otherwise of a shoe to the foot or the finishing off of such work to the foot.”

Thanks everyone for advice!

Weebrown - yep I did have to scrape the barrell for those cons!! TBH i can only ride in one school at a time, if i really want to jump over coloured poles i could always hire them at Oldencraig for the hour, and re the horsewalker - i should really lunge them and get more out of them!! Would love to try other yard out for a few weeks/month but cant really afford both right now - any other time yes but was a bit silly with ££ last month...

just want to get out of there yesterday!!

Flowerlady - I have posted a couple of times (although I never really whinged about current yard as always worry who may be on here!). There a lot of part and full livery yards - tbh thats not something i can really afford for both of them, plus seeing what you get for full livery at present yard i would never want anyone looking after them for me - its completly put me off!! Re how much he charges - its £50 for a full set (+ £5 if they have new shoes) and £15 for a trim. I used to pay £55 for a full set with my old farrier who was also a remedial for the vets...so v good!! Everyone on the yard uses this guy including someone who has some very expensive show jumpers...

LCobby - thats exactly what my Mum thinks - sounds like they are trying to push us out!!

I'm going to call today and say I'd like to come, then have to work out how to get them there

!

I think i may well report it (although as in original post there would be reasons i would not want to do this - pm me if you really want to know!) - the other DIYer only told me on weds that he wasn't registered - i had no idea up until then and I've been there since Sep 06. Thinking back he has been quite cagey about that when i have questioned various things...

Another vote to move! The difference in milage in negligable in terms of you getting there or petrol costs. The other things you are loosing like the horse walker or extra schools are 'nice to haves' not essentials and I'm sure the fact that you can bed down on what you choose, have your own (registered) farrier, have water to your field, no dogs jumping up etc, etc, etc will more than make up for it! Go for it.

I would move tomorrow, then check out this guy's registration on the web site, if he's not there, then report him asap. I think I would also inform the BHS as I believe they keep a record of 'poor' places.
