I have an exmoor pony, had him about 2 years and he has just begun to get sores down his back legs and between his legs - his legs are quite close together but i find it strange how he has only just started getting this. His poohas not changed and he never has this down his legs which could cause this so i do not know whats causing it and what to do. have tried smothering in creams and tried sudo cream to prevent chaffing but doesn't seem to stop it... any ideas??
Thank you

i could try and take some tomorrow. no its at the top round his bottom - then down nearly to his hock i suppose on and off.

My horse has this problem and I ended up having to call the vet out, apparently he had got mites in his heels and the itching was going up between his legs, he has bit himself raw right to the tops of his legs on the inside.
My horse has feather, has yours ?
He now has regular injections of Dectomax until the horrid creatures have cleared up, does your horse have any scabs in his heels?
If so then it could be mites, these vile things live in the mud and can be confused with mud fever.

Oh gosh hadn't thought of that - is there ne cream or ne think i can give him/put on/wash him with to help or is vet the only answer?thanks so much

You could give a good scrub with Dermoline shampoo, leave it on the skin a few minutes before rinsing off, or try Hibiscrub.
It is only a temporary relief solution though.
I would get the vet to have a look as these mites spread like wild fire, I hate the rotten little B*******!

When they get really bad the horse will start stamping thier feet on the floor. Have a look on Google and look at some pics of horses legs that are affected with mites.
I could not believe they have crept up from his heels into his rear end.

I was going to say mites too. My pony had scabs up his legs where he had been chewing at them. I thought it was mud rash to begin with. He was also very touchy feely around his heels. It wasnt til he started stamping his feet and rubbing them against everything that I realised it was mites.

Seems ok now, after some frontline treatment from the vets.

Hope you get it sorted soon!

I always use Benzyl Benzoate for any bad skin condition first before anything else. You can get it from a chemist. Its like a milk and is cool and soothing. It cannot do any harm if it doesnt work. (Its the main ingredient in Killitch too.) Probably a lot cheaper than anything else. Effective against all nits, body lice, etc. (people and animals). Also smear a bit on and in the ears in summer to keep those horrible little ear flies away.

Going a little (a lot) off track here - but although I agree with what exracerfan said about Benzyl Benzoate - please could I warn you all to NEVER use Benzyl Benzoate anywhere on or near cats. For some reason unknown to me, (but I'm sure you can find out via a Web search) it has some weird effect on a cat's brain and can send them delirious.

AFAIK, it's okay to use on other animals, though.

Sorry for the unsolicited diversion...
