advice needed on first time hunting my mare is a old hand but does get worked up very fizzy she was a gentlemans hunter until 3 yrs ago when she did some showjumping shes a 16hh chestnut mare, iv never done it but very curious about it what am i to expect? and is there usually a option on the jumps? any advice be very greatfull

am not sure which hunt thats the second thing to look in to im in sheffield so if anyone knows of a local one there was one at wentworth last yr so honestly not sure

Do you know how she actually reacts out hunting. As fizzy for some peapole is being strong and others not standing etc etc, would say that most hunts will normally have a way round jumps!
The MFHA website as a list of packs which you should then be able to find your local ones, as most foxhunts won't openly display there meets on a website etc! But you could then ring up the secretary, who will also know more about the jumping etc. Do you which pack she used to hunt with?

she just gets over excited jig jogs and very strong she used to be a huntmasters horse as far as iv been told so shes used to being up front but with a man im only 5"3 hopefully it wont make a difference has anyone hunted with grove and rufford thats the one that was at wentworth estate

Prop best to try and go out on a quoted day first then so that not as many peapole, so that shell feel she's nearer the front, mine is v simialar and prefers to b up the front, all tho far as I know she hasn't been a FMs horse, part from the half hour she was last sat, which she loved, and didn't want to go behind once I was back on her, lol!! She is only 14.2 but I have hunted bigger horses I'm only like 5"2,

Why don't you wait until next season and start her off Autumn Hunting? You will then be able to see how she would behave on a quieter day and less exciting day......
There are usually non jumpers who will show you a way around the jumps if necessary.

I've hunted a few 17.2hh horses and i'm only a small 5ft2. Agree with all thats said above. I would prob wait till next season to hunt the horse now as it is nearly the end of the season. I would look into which pack i would hunt with and try to follow on foot a few times this season to get an idea of what they are like and what the country they hunt over is like. You can also use it as an oppatunity to get to know the people who hunt and get your face seen it will help when you hunt your horse as the hunt will know who you are. If you realy want to hunt the horse this season i would ring the hunt sec and ask when they have a quieter day. (usualy in the week) Also there are usaly lots of people who don't jump there is nearly always a way round a jump. I would ask at the meet if there is anyone who doesn't jump and ask them if they mind showing you the way round. I hope you have a fab time when you do go. Let us know how you get on.

i hunt regulaly with the rockood and there is normally plenty of jumping with us but it does depend on the meet. last time i went with the grove and rufford at wentworth there was alot of jumping. when are you looking to go? how long have you had the mare just out of interest?

Most horses once they have been a huntsmans horse up front, dont really ever settle back "in the field" or only on very rare occasions. The hunt that met on the Wentworth estate last year was the Grove and Rufford, it would of been an ideal quite meet, but they arent having a meet there anymore. The Barlow is Sheffield way why dont you ring the secretary and ask when they are having some quite days.

thanks guys iv not had her long the girl that had her before did some sj with her but before that she did her hunting so was about 4yrs ago a quieter day does sound good to me as i know i han handle her but iv not ridden out with more than 2 others on her and shes very forward going then i have visions of not being able to stop and her wanting to race everything lol

Yes i did the gates- thankfully the Dextercet missile cob will stand beautifully for gates as long as he is allowed to gallop flat out to catch up!

I cannot believe your appy is 23 :-O hope the coloured went well!

I was coming on Thursday but got 1/2 a mile up the road and my bl**dy exhaust fell off the truck :[ limped back with a leadrope holding it on so Dex and i went for a gallop up the ridgeway as its hackable from my yard! Missed Saturday too as i had use of a trailer but the other horse was so hopping lame i had to stay at home with the vet :[ Definately out Thursday with Bicester and Saturday with VAH :)
