hello,

does anyone know of any other options i may not have thought of for my situation.

me and my four dogs have to leave my partner and home after breakdown in the relationshp.
i have persevered for a long time however he is getting more and more verbally agressive and threatening toward me.

the problem is that i cant find anywhere that is prepared to rent although my dogs are all well behaved, clean, trained dogs.

i have some money, although not enough for a house, and have been looking to buy a field in devon and was hoping to get planning permission for a mobile home. however i have been told this isnt possible unless there is a property with the field also.

i would be happy to live in someones estate or farm and work for them, preferably with animals, in exchange for accomodation for me and my dogs.
i am in my forties with grown up children at university.

i never leave two of my dogs alone, they go everywhere with me, the two older dogs stay at home as they get tired after there walk.
they are all house trained, well trained and groomed. they bark like all dogs do when someone visits and then settle quickly.

although i shall be classified as homeless i cannot be rehoused as they wont allow the dogs and i am not prepared to go anywhere without my dogs.

anyone who owns dogs are going to know why i shall not be without my dogs, hence why im posting on this website.

i shall live in my car with my dogs if i have to although am trying to avoid that as not ideal.

if anyone has any suggestions i eagerly await your reply.

much appreciated in advance.

ms worried.

Keep trying, something will come up, I did exactly the same 2 years ago, I eventually found a cottage with a garden and me and all four dogs are safely installed here. I found this place through hand writing a few wanted adverts and placing in local feed stores, village shops etc....I had absolutely no luck through any agencies although have managed to get previous houses with the dogs through agencies. I wouldnt give up my dogs either so know exactly what you are going through it was a very worrying time until I got a phone call from a lovely old farmer (my now landlord) about this cottage. Make that your priority tomorrow (sticking up wanted cards) make them honest, brief and eye catching with a ballpark 'willing to pay' amount. Also mention you would look at mobile homes etc. Often in rural areas people are literally sitting on these modest little abodes and doing nothing with them, the appeal of extra money, especially in this climate is a good one. Once you have installed you and the dogs away from the OH and are settled you can think about land purchase etc and keep your eyes open for stuff that comes up but get yourself settled somewhere feasible first.

hello vizlak,
much appreciated for your reply.
good idea, i hadnt thought of local feed stores and farmer stores.
there is one locally, i shall do that soon.
glad you found somewhere and this looks possible.
how many dogs did you have when you found the property and did
the farmer mind the dogs.

I have four dogs, and did when I was looking, so exactly the same as you. No he doesnt mind the dogs at all and is more than happy with the way I look after the property. He also refurbed a lot of the house before I moved in, put new carpets in for me etc. I landed on my feet here but in my wildest dreams through the period I was madly phoning/emailing about every property in a 30 mile radius, I did not think I would get anything like this. I was also considering sleeping in the car at one point, the dogs are non negotiable! It is possible so keep plugging away something will turn up as long as you try hard enough. :) Good luck, keep us updated.
ETS dont forget cards in village shops.

Sorry you're going thru such a hard time. I think if I had a "bit of money" I'd be looking to buy a motor home to live in if necessary - I'm another one that would quicker live in my lorry than give up my dogs. And my lorry hasn't even got living in it! LOL

mozart, your situation sounds quite dreadful. If letting agents, or landlords have a blanket No Pets policy, and considering how desperate you are, then in your shoes, I simply wouldn't tell them. Keep your head down, your nose clean, pay your rent on time, and they may just ignore you!

I'm sure that the No Pets policy is often in place, knowing full well that tenants will ignore it, but it's simply there as a lever to evict the less than desirable.

You don't give any indication of where abouts in the country you are, but I'd suggest that you get a copy of The Farmers Guardian. If needs be, place an advert in it.

I also think that you should sit down, write out a list of those things at which you're qualified, or even good at, do it on here if you like, then it could be massaged into shape, and called a CV, couldn't it? ;):D

Alec.

What a rotten situation to be in :(

Have you tried getting in touch with landlords who have adverts stating 'no dogs' anyway? Some just put it in as a blanket policy but can be a bit more amenable if you actually approach them about it.

Up until recently we were renting with three dogs and have rented before with two and we've never struggled to find somewhere that would take us. In most cases we agreed to put down a bigger deposit than they were asking for and it was written into the rental agreement that we would have the house professionally cleaned every six months/when we left. We never had a problem and always got our deposit back.

It's certainly worth getting onto landlords and offering a bigger deposit/a bit more per month if they'll let you have your dogs.

hello ,
really appreciate all the replies.
the motorhome option is one i have thought of and is my last option. i have already decided i shall sell my car if need be and get a motorhome.
i have contacted agencies that say no dogs and some are adament, and some say okay to one dog with more of a deposit. i am prepared for paying more of a deposit, dont mind that at all.
i am very reluctant to mislead and not mention the dogs as i would hate to find myself in similar situation again.
i have been to lets for pets and pet friendly lets and there are none available in devon.
i am sending messages to farmers website next. much appreciated for all advice.

I rent and to be honest have told some landlords I have 1 dog when there have been more, or just not mentioned them!

If done through an agency, in my experience they never make checks on you - so if your dogs are well behaved then nobody would be any the wiser. One private house I had the owner lived abroad so had no idea if I did/didn't have dogs.

Some have known about the animals and been fine with it, others have asked for a slightly bigger deposit. But I've always found somewhere - I'm in plymouth, so SW Devon.

I would call private ads and explain your personal situation - many I have contacted in this manner (even when ad states NO PETS!!!) have agreed to the dogs :)

Good luck with your search

Kim

Our neighbours rent their house and have dogs and cats. They offered an enhanced deposit to the landlords and that was accepted. It might be worth trying that approach.

Also try holiday lets. They often allow dogs. May be a bit more expensive than your average rental but a deal could be done for long term use I guess. Do be careful with the whole lying approach. My old house was rented and they did inspections every three months without fail- even before they allowed us to have the dog.... it would be quite hard to hide 4!!

hello lexiedhb,
i ceratainly wouldnt be happy misleading, that isnt an option.
hadnt thought of holiday lets as i want a permanent home.although i suppose i cld ask.
appreciate the posting. :)

Sorry to hear about your situation - I was in a similar position many years ago when my husband and I split up as it was totally non-negotiable about the dogs. Apart from a brief spell with a Housing Association I have always rented privately and have never had a problem with dogs or pets in general.

At my last house there was a little group of 5 ex-farm cottages, all rented out and everyone had dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea-pigs etc! In fact all my landlord wouldn't let me have were chickens!! Only one was let through an agency and as others have said they had a clause that said they had to have the carpets cleaned when they left.

I am now fortunate enough to have a cottage that goes with my job on a stud/farm so am back up to three dogs!

Good luck with your search.

Jo

Are there any big estates locally you could contact. My neighbour is an estate cottage and allows pets. When the previous tenants moved further north they found another estate cottage quite easily.

So sorry to hear about your situation. I have had friends who have had real trouble finding rentals when they have dogs, so I know how tough it can be out there.

Do you need to stay in the same area? If you could relocate, you would open out more possibilities. The Lady magazine often has ads for pet friendly rentals, sometimes cheaper in exchange for housework/gardening duties.

Hubby and I may be renting out our house in a few months time - I am determined to allow tenants with pets!

Sorry to hear about your situation. I'm sorry i don't really have anything to add except to wish you well. There is NO way I'd go anywhere without my dogs so hopefully something will come up. Definitely try a 'wanted' advert or two - my sister only rented out her house after reading a wanted advert.

I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing a difficult time and I hope you get things sorted soon.

I just wanted to say that a friend recently moved into a Grade II listed property that has just been completely refurbished using one of the country's top letting agents. She has three dogs and one cat. So it is possible to let a property through a very fussy agency with pets. At the end of the day it should be the owners decision whether to take pets not the agencies.

They may request a larger deposit and/or extra cleaning at the end of the tenancy.

The only white lie she told was about the breeds. One is a staffie and due to the bad press they get she said it was a cross breed.

Good luck I hope you find something soon.

Good luck, hope you find somewhere
I also rent with dogs, it is harder to find, you do need to offer something such as larger deposit, agreement in writing to deep clean carpets etc but in the end someone will say yes.

I always say small, older, rescue dogs - all of which is true, but if you can decribe the dog and have a previous reference from a landlord who was happy to house the dogs then it's possible

Good luck
