advice needed

hi all. after some long consideration, I have decided to sell B. in 2 months he's had me in hospital 3 times and I've now been signed off work and can't look after him. what I need help with now is this: when I came out of hospital, I got a call from a woman who used to ride B and said if ever I decided to sell him could she have first refusal. this obviously came at the right time! she got my number off the dealer I bought him from and it was at his yard that she used to ride him. (apparently she helps him out with 'problem' horses, which if I'd known at the time would have reconsidered buying b). she also bought a horse from him who she is selling at the moment. she says she would like b asap as she has a cross country course to ride next week (although her advert for her mare says for sale as she is ill). she says once her horse is sold she will be able to pay for b, however because of situation and her keeness to have b asap, would i loan him out to her in the meantime. apparently, she went back to see the dealer who suggested this. I'm hesitant about this - maybe I'm too untrusting - but can anyone advise me on this?
And just for the record, I am still going to be doing my long ride, just been postponed due to not being able to ride for 6 months!

As long as you draw up a watertight loan contract then it could work. However, what if she doesn't sell the other horse?

Have you phoned the dealer from where you bought your horse to see if he can buy him back?

I wouldnt be surpised if she either doesnt sell the other horse or will need the money for something else and will be unable to pay you. If you are okay with that then fine - get a decent contract and loan her the horse. If you want to sell him and want the money though, I'd think twice. Why would she pay you for him if she can have him on loan for nothing?

In a word No.

It's akin to selling a childrens pony at this time of year, someone wants a weeks trial so they have a pony for PC camp, she wants to do XC as far as I can see from your post.

I don't loan (bad experiences, one horse vanished into thin air, another had to be pts) or do trials. Too much can go wrong, your horse could have an accident doing XC with her and be damaged, what good is that to you then?

Yes, I would sell to her, but the horse wouldn't leave the yard until the cash was in my hand, that goes for any horse I sell.

No, I wouldn't loan out my completely unfit, stabled 24/7 with no exercise, horse so someone could ride it round a cross country course the following week oddly enough!

Am confused anyway.....I thought he had previously been a working ranch horse, then a 'trick' horse......now he's an eventer?

Good point JAK!

Contact the dealer - ask him to buy the horse back (you won't get anywhere near what you paid for it). And put it all down to experience.......
