Hi,
Please can I ask if you think my 3yo Welsh D is looking to lean?
I’ve had a few say that she is looking to lean & needs to be fatter whilst she’s growing?
She has lost weight during spring because the grass isn’t coming through to well with the lack of rain. I’ve been asking the farmer if she can move into the larger field with others as she currently shares a smaller paddock with a much larger horse.

I think she looks okay. That said, I wouldn't want her any thinner. Providing she's getting good vitamins and minerals, you don't really want to be offering anything else other than hay/grass. If she stays like that or drops I'd definitely be looking to add some targeted conditioning feed without the fizz going in to Winter.

Thanks she is currently already being fed coolstance copra, stud balancer & Alfa an oil, & hay, she just doesn’t seem to be gaining. I have sent off her stool for worm count to see if that gives any answers. Its bizarre because she did much better over the winter period

I have to say I’m surprised a Welsh D needs that level of feed and I’d caution you on it!

Very difficult to tell condition on that angle of photo but initial impression is not too lean. Coat looks fine and from what I can tell nicely covered. She might look lean compared to others, but if they are fat (which let’s face it many horses are) then she would in comparison. You don’t want to overtop young growing horses.

Personally it would be stud balancer and hay for me. It’s what all mine are on.
