I am pulling my hair out, his back has been checked, teeth have been done... And have gone and found a lovely light rider to come and give him a good ride out so that he is not just a lead rein pony and he can have some fun, but ...,,,

For the last few months when we ask for canter he is throwing in a big buck!!!!

Both my daughter and the older rider are very quiet riders, but it is just the first few strides of canter, not nasty more like a yey haw we are having fun!!!' luckily my 5 year daughter is on to him and sits tight.

It is starting to get me a bit annoyed now though, I have checked everything, and even found a rider who can allow h to let off steam ... So please HHO , any ideas? Xx

Easier said than done but big kick on as most peoples reaction is to snatch the reins to pull head up but if you try to big kick on and ask to go forward. Mine use to do an excitable buck in transition but it wasnt deep enough to unseat me.

Mine was doing this and perhaps weirdly what cured (I hope) her was going back to a snaffle (loose ring French link for info) bit from a Dr Cook's Bitless Bridle. I did also get back & teeth done, but defo seems to have been the bit that altered her.

I would lunge him, do lots of transitions to canter making sure he is not allowed to buck, it sounds like a habit that is becoming established. Make sure the older girl is not holding him back and making it worse, maybe avoid cantering under saddle for a week or two until he is reliable on the lunge.

If everything about him is sound, I agree with the above of transitions, ridden & lunged.

Have a very similar horse who did this because he was bored (despite regular hacking)! Livened up his routine with bending, jumping & lateral work to make him think and he's turning into a changed horse.

Could your one be bored with being a LR? Could you liven up his routine?
What about some gymnkhana-style games for his LR rider - fun for jockey & pony :)

Will try doing more transitions, he does Pc so lots of jumping, and does mounted games, I too was worried he was getting bored of being just a lr hence asking an experienced older rider to come and give him some fun :)

Will try all the ideas given
