i get my horses back checked on a 6monthly basis as standard... he was last checked at the end of october... which makes him due for another check at the end of April... my dilema is that i am going to the cricklands winter league finals... 16-19th april...

I want to be sure his back is 100% for that event...(he doesnt have major issues but oftern needs a little tweek here and there and a couple of days off and a couple more days gentle work after being treated.)

so what do i do... leave it and get it check after the show as normal... unless he shows signs of needing it sooner...

... or do i bring it forward by about a month to get him done just before we go... but run the risk that if he needs a couple of weeks off after that my fitness programme will be affected....

... obviously longer that a couple of days of will have meant that he NEEDED his back doing... but even just small adjustments just before we go might throw the last min preparations...

if its not checked before we go... he will be check after... especially as he will have done more jumping in 3 days that we normally would in 3 weeks at the show.

what do you think...

check early or leave it unless he NEEDS it before??

I would have him checked a month or two sooner, you want him to go to Cricklands on top form so he needs to have his tweaks sorted first!

Good Luck

If you feel he's ok and its just a rountine thing then I'd personally leave it until after the event.

But he's not 100% you wouldnt want to risk further problems anyway by competing him, therefore it would make sense to have his back looked at now so he's right when your riding him, be it normally or if your fittening him up for an event.

Thats how I'd look at it.

If your horse needs treatment and time off before the competition then so be it. If you didnt get him checked because you are worried about what might be found and carried on regardless then he wont perform as well as if he was totally comfortable anyway. If you wait until he is showing behavioural signs and you think he needs his back checked, there will be more to sort out!

Get it checked one month before.
