I have a 8 year old cob gelding and he is currently ridden in a Myler Level 1 Bit. My instructor has suggested I change to a less severe bit for schooling but stick to my current bit when out hacking for more control (it seems, on looking at the Myler website, that the level of this bit has changed from Level 1 when I purchased it to a Level 3 now!!). She said that the bit I am riding him in now is used for bringing a horse up to the bit (I think, got confused a bit) but I need something else as he doesn't need this. He is very heavy at the front so needs lightening up here plus we are trying to get him using his stomach muscles more plus lifting his feet. She suggested a loose ring but can anyone suggest anything further on this? Should I go for a loose ring, warm metal bit (eg German silver) with lozenge?

I swear by Neue Schule bits and they do lots with lozenges and different mouthpiece sizes.

My percheron x tends to set his neck, lean onto the hand and nap. I am now using a NS Waterford drop cheek and it is working a treat and certainly stops him being too heavy in the hand.
