Out of interest, I was wondering if anyone could advise. There are no guarantees that we will get another dog, but it is something I am seriously considering.

So, what am I looking for? It needs to:
- Get along with other dogs
- Be ok being left at home for around 7hrs a day (with the company of another dog)
- Not need too much exercise (30mins or so per day, can do upto an hour if need be)
- Be ok living in a large flat (with our own reasonably sized secure garden)
- Must be a large-ish dog (I have a Chow Chow pup who loves to play rough - never means any harm, just likes to throw her weight around given the chance. Anything smaller than herself she sends flying, and she weighs 18kgs at 5 months)

I know each dog is an individual, but does anyone have any reccomendations? My girl loves other dogs and I feel awful leaving her alone during the day. I have enough love for another one, so why not?

I'm quite open really - only dogs I don't like are small breeds and staffies, both of which would be squished by Chowling

The ideal would be to get another Chow, but sadly I don't have the funds to go out and spend £1200 on a dog at present.

I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks!

Def not GSPs. Need a lot of excercise. They do generally get along with other dogs but would hate being with out its owner for 7 hours and would end up destroying your house. They love human company but need a job of work to do. IMO.

I have considered it, yes, but the only Chow rescues I can find are miles away and I doubt they would rehome that far away. You don't generally get Chows in rescue as there are so few of them about.

Kate - quite often people tell me my girl looks like a bear

Think about it. If no dog was allowed to be left for that amount of time, how many homes would actually be seen as suitable? Believe it or not, dogs ARE capable of entertaining themselves for a while, and most dogs sleep for the majority of the time anyway. Even if I do have a day off and spend it all with my dog, she still sleeps pretty much non stop for the 7 hours I would normally be out for. Because she was going to have to be left, I chose an independant, low energy dog - I didn't blindly walk in and get something like a dalmation.

Each to their own I guess, but I personally don't see it to be cruel to leave a dog at home, especially with the company of another dog.

Leving a dog alone for 7 hours is not ideal imo, but I know quite a few people who do it. When I was breeding I would never have sold a puppy to a home where it was going to be left all day, but an older dog would probably adapt to it. I can't really advise you what breed to have, but would say not a GSD as they need a lot of mental stimulation, and would not be happy on their own for so long, and would probably need a lot more exercise too. It would be worth trying Chow rescue, as you have experienc of the breed they may well be interested, they could always find someone local to you to do home checks etc.

Well said ! someone always has to say this, come and see my dogs, both had the sad misfortune to end up in homes where they were not left for 7 hours. Basically both were thoroughly screwed up by the so called "Perfect Home" It has taken me months to get two decent dogs back!

Quite frankly I have spent my whole dog owning life sorting out dogs that have been runined by perfect homes. Because I don't have kids and I have my own land I can taken on dogs with problems as I do, but I need to work in order to do this and I am fed up with people making this stupid generic ill thought out statement.

I have never had a puppy because I work but have provided super homes to a whole number of dogs who needed help. A home should be judged on its interraction with and care of the dog NOT ON HOW MANY HOURS IT WORKS!

Totally agree with you Shadowflame, i work full time so my dogs are used to been left. But even on my days off they still sleep.
Yes in a perfect world we would spend all day, everyday with our dogs, but this isnt a perfect world.

How about a lurcher? They are friendly with other dogs, don't need lots of exercise and love to sleep all day!! They can also hold their own playing!
