Advice on Equi Trek trailers or alternatives?

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone can offer any information on the Equi Trek trailers or alternative large trailers with some basic living?

Having had a big lorry, moved onto a delighful 3.5 Marlborough Hunter (which I love) now want to get a trailer, many of which I have seen at events around and seem to do a great job.

My mare travels well in a lorry and my Marlborough Hunter as I presume the travelling facing backwards is much better - therefore one of the Equi Trek trailers should feel the same? She did not travel well facing forward in an ifor williams but the larger equi trek backward facing seems a good option?

As my little lorry tends to sit all winter and I have a pulling vehicle as well it seems sensible to move the lorry on and get a trailer now.

Any comparisons on the equi treks would be great and also laden weight etc as if I carry two horses and double tack etc dont want to be overladen?

I've had my Euqitrek Showtrekka for 6 years now and I love it. Plenty will tell you they are badly made etc etc, but I haven't had any problems at all with it.

The horses travel well in it, and I have made 3 majorly long journeys in it - all over 11hrs and the horses have come out fresh and sprightly at the other end. As for staying in it, well thats fine too, just have to make sure you have enough bedding during the colder months.

I tow with and Isuzu Rodeo and have towed a 16.2hh ID and a chunky cob without being overweight. Now towing smaller horses and still it sits on the road fine. Even empty its tows well.

Can't compare to any other box with living for you, as I haven't had one, but as I said at the start I love mine, and would be hard pushed to part with it.
 
I had a space trekka for a few years which was great. I didn't stay overnight at any shows but the small living was useful and I had two tack lockers under horses heads as well. Horses travelled exceptionally well and plenty of head room etc for big horses but I had to get extra ventilation put in the roof as got warm even with all the windows open.

For weights and ageing 4x4, I upgraded to a horsebox but then again my two ID types were weighing in at 700kg & 848kg which is not typical!
 
I can swap you my equitrek (the old slightly more robust version) for your Marlborough! Lol

Seriously, I do love my equitrek, I love the space and everything that comes with.
 
So, regarding the weight you are allowed to pull - is it more than when you travel horses in a 3.5 lorry when my allowance is about 1.1? Sorry unsure as been a long time since I have towed.

Thanks for your help = yes, I love my marlborough but it is a waste of money having it sitting all winter!
 
The weight you can tow will depend on which trailer and which tow vehicle.

Be careful of manufacturers recommendations as they may not include in base weight the extras which have been put on such as tack lockers, living etc but it will give you the unladen weight and the gross weight - the difference is what you can legally put in the trailer BUT you then need to make sure that your vehicle is capable of towing that weight.

I have space trekka M and love it - v useful to hang all kit in front to save putting all in car and tack lockers are great.

Just beware - the L is alot heavier than the M as it is larger - also there is a recall on axles of some Show trekka and Space Trekka L (new axle fitted for free though)

So as a general rule are you ok with a big heavy pulling vehicle like a Land Rover Discovery AND pulling two 580 horses with tack etc - about 1200 roughly?

A disco I think has a tow of 3.5 tonnes. My equitrek showtrekka is 1600kg unladen, so that would give you somewhere in the region of 1900kg for all the other things, horses, tack, you etc. If the tow is 3 tonne, then you have 1400kg 'left'.

This is how I understand it - although I may well be wrong!
 
I have an older Equitrek 5* Executive (six-wheel model) towed by a Discovery 3. It tows well though the outfit is pretty long - beware roundabouts, those little wheels and tyres are expensive to replace (no I haven't broken mine, but had a warning from the helpful chap who services it for me!)

As far as towing goes - a friend at our stables had a Show Treka type which she was towing with a Jeep (a Cherokee, I think) and had problems with the rear of the car being lifted up in the air while towing so had to sell it. With a big beast like the Disco you'll probably be OK with most loads (my daughter is on ponies so the weight of the horse isn't an issue for us), but just be aware there can be issues even with a 4WD.

Build quality isn't marvellous IMO but it does the job and having some space is nice when you want to take shelter at winter shows!
