My loan pony has been diagnosed with a low protein count in her blood following a routine blood test.

The vet has advised worming for encysted strongyles and also feeding psyllium husk in case she has ingested some soil and has a leaky gut.

I have the psyllium husk, but want to know, do I feed it dry, or soak it so it is like a gel?

I soaked it tonight just in case, but if anyone can help I would be grateful.

Also grateful for any info on low protein count as I have never had this problem before with a horse. Thanks

Yes you feed psyllium wet :) usually comes with instructions too?!

I guess it depends on why the protein is low, whether there is an immune issue, anaemia or lack of it in the diet. Whats she being fed?

Thanks Tiger Tail, no there were no instructions, I got the bag from my feed merchant, and it was just a bag of it stating size and price. So thanks, and I'm glad I wetted it.

She is fed a low sugar diet of Healthy Hoof Molasses free (only about a handful) plus Baileys Lo Cal (No. 14) and a very small amount of Soft n Soak sugar free mash + garlic. I have now added some activated charcoal to it as well.

She is 12 years old and does drink and wee more than the others, so I had her tested for cushings, but it came back clear, so no issues.

I have asked the vet if I should do a urine sample test as well incase she is losing protein from her kidneys.

I feed it for 5-7 days every month as specified by loan pony's owner but also now do my horses with it too. I add it dry to a damp feed.

I would stop feeding garlic it can cause anemia, this is an interesting article on the effect it can have

Thanks for that be positive, I will look into this. I only started feeding garlic as she seemed to be a bit nasally during summer and gave a couple of coughs, this did stop soon after feeding garlic, so I kept it up. She had her lungs checked during her check up and they were all clear, so I will stop the garlic. x
