My 13 year old ID / TB gelding is currently living out , on plenty of grass, hay if he is in the stable for any reason and gets a hard feed once a day - half scoop of nuts and one and half alfafa plus garlic, limestone and soya oil. hes in hard work - ridden every day, competed every week, lessons etc , and he is just right weight wise and energy at the mo. however, i am taking him to uni with me in sept and he will be stabled most of the time (at Hartpury), i will be keeping him in hard work , and will hand graze him every day. Obviously most of his diet will be hay, what do ppl reccommend i feed him hard feed wise? he does need an eye kept on to keep his weight up, but i with him being stabled i dont want to be overfeeding him with energy , any ideas?

Hartpury get all of their feed from SPILLERS so maybe you could call them and see what they suggest?

We use feeds called WINERGY Equilibrium which are fibre based, take longer to eat, increase fibre intake, naturally conditioning etc. Sounds like just the thing for your boy.

ring SPILLERS or you could email WINERGY at winergy.equilibrium@effem-equine.com

Good luck, enjoy college - I had a fab time there!

When you go to hartpury dont listen to the spillers nutionist .... said my horse should be on happy hoof and thats all....... yeah ok.

I found it hard to balance it all there no turnout horse dropping bit of weight but bit fizzy. (I found it harder then as was on a full time ND course not as much time to ride) BUT will find it alot easier on degree with more time.

I had mine on hay (mind you dont get alot of that) alfa beet and spillers slow release cubes. (mind not that much as is only 15hh)

You dont have to get spillers from them ....... very easy to go out and get others with a CWG very near.

You'll find it hard to hand graze everyday as not many places you can do that.

I'll have the same problem with my other one thats coming with him, he drops a bit when stressed.

can you buy extra hay if you need it? my lad is 16:3 so i dont rekon hel be getting enough forage , wat degree ru starting eventergirl can i pm you?
