Hi there, am in the process of getting quotes and have looked at NFU, South Essex and will get one from Petplan. Firstly, I would appreciate any views on these 3 companies or recommendation on any others. Secondly, what are your thoughts on the amount of Vets Fees to be covered as the premium varies considerably based on this. For example one company quotes a premium of £488 with Vets fees of £5K and a premium of £382 with Vets fees of £1,500. What would you advise is a sensible amount for Vets fees? Really appreciate anybody's advice. Thanks, Jane

I would advise the 5k vets fees option and I wish they'd offer more. Also make sure it's a per incident one not a per year total one.
You can bring down the cost sometimes if you increase your excess if you can afford that.
The only insurance I've ever made money on is horse insurance.
All three companies you list have good reputations in general.

I too wouldn't recommend anything less than £5K cover on vets fees unless you have some savings put aside should you need it in case of accident or illness.

I've always found NFU to be best value/best cover for me and mine - also insure my trailer with them too.

Agree with Polar_Bear, opt for £5K per incident, which is what I have with NFU (And lord knows I am utilising it

It may also be worth getting a quote from KBIS, as they are also recommendable

I have always insured with Scottish Equestrian and they have always come back at the best cost (having had a broker look at the market for me). I know they pay out as i had my last horse out down due to a horrid accident and they paid everything i claimed for, with no queries. Value of horse and all vets costs were covered. Received funds within a month once they had the vet reports.

Another vote for KBIS they have been fantastic.

With them you can choose 3K or 5K vets bills. I chose the 3K but very nearly went over it last year.

Next time I will go for the higher one, its really easy to spend that much.

£5k per incident minimum cover is really needed. I'm with NFU, they aren't always the cheapest quote but on the occasions I've had to make a claim there has never been any problem with them paying out promptly.
