Hi everyone,

Apologies for my first post being a question!

I've been having real difficulty in finding a saddle to fit my horse. He's a TB (stocky), has a fair amount of wither but then has quite a straight, flat, short back. Most saddles lift up at the back, but after a lot of reading I believe the Ideal saddles might be suitable for him (though please correct me if I'm wrong!).

He currently has a Thorowgood T4 with a wide gullet in, but I really don't like synthetic saddles and it does lift up at the back. I was looking at a second hand Ideal VSD in a wide and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on how wide Ideals come up? I'd be buying without trying it on as it's an online buy, but would be getting the saddler out to check it once purchased.

Any advice much appreciated :)

I have an Ideal saddle which came with my horse. It's an 18" wide (she's a 16.3 warmblood/hunter type). She has got a long back which I would say is pretty flat, although not a huge amount of wither. It seems to fit fine and haven't noticed it lifting at all. Having said that I am due to get a saddle fitter out to check it all.

Just to add on that it is a gorgeous saddle and am very pleased with it. Have to say the only slight issues I have are that I do have a seat saver on now because I find if I ride for longer than an hour I get pretty uncomfortable on the bum bones!! To be honest I think I would have this in any saddle though. It is a heavy saddle, so that may prevent it from lifting so much.

:) thanks. Do they come up particualrly wide/ narrow in comparison to other saddles? Although he has a wide Thorowgood, I was unsure whether he was likely to be a wide in an Ideal.

I have an ideal event on a high withered TB. Had it for about 10 yrs now & it still looks good. However he's very lightweight, as far as I can remember it's a medium fit but was made for him & at the time the saddler put quite a lot of flocking in. I bought it when he was young & I think the theory was if he filled out a lot it could be kept less flocked. Never did fill out much! It's checked regularly by the same saddler & still fits well. I also had it made with a extra wide seat(saddlers suggestion so it was roomy enough to jump comfortably in) & it has the square cantle instead of rounded one.

We had an Ideal vsd wide on a chunky tb and it was a super fit, I would say that ideals are generally easy to fit and have generous panel depth so are fairly adaptable.
Also very comfy:)

:) brill, thanks everyone I think I might take my chances and buy it! This will be saddle number 4... I really hope it fits!!

With the VSD are they forward cut enough to jump in? My boy hasn't really started much jumping yet, but wondered if it would be ok for when we start doing a bit more?

It will be fine for jumping, until things get more serious then you may need something more forward cut, but they are great saddles to get started with.

Excellent, I think I'm just about decided! I'm a bit of a baby with jumping so it'll take a fair amount of time for us to get up to anything serious :)

Thanks for your help everyone, really appreciated
