REALLY????? I have no idea about poles & she knows this so please aDvise so i cAn message her back, i feel pretty ripped off even though it does look lovely, i paid £50 but would cost me £20 in petrol to take back to her + i dont think it will fit in my car, also pole was bolted on to the ends but in removeable, PLEASE HELP!!! I am not happy,

Thank you in advanced

I am sorry your purchase has been a disappointment, only a horse person would know just how much you were looking forward to your first purchased jump!

Firstly it would not matter weather or not Cavaletti are "normally 8ft" or not, as you ordered 12ft, so that was the verbal contract between you.

I have used Cavaletti in my youth, and they were always 10ft or 12ft, so I guess that would be traditional.

As for split poles, well they may be normal for her, but my jump poles have always arrived not split!

Also as regards the return, if the goods are faulty then the seller has to pay the return postage. The only exception would be if you examined and accepted the goods on delivery, which you may have done, but if she dropped and ran then you may not have done.

As an aside, I loathe Cavaletti, if they are knocked the fixed pole does not just drop off as a pole would on a jump cup, but the whole Cavaletti can rotate. A pony at my local riding school tripped on one like this and as it rolled the pony could not find his feet, and was severely injured and had to be put to sleep.

I have bought some jumps on ebay too, and my latest set had small wings, and 10ft poles. They were quite cheap, and lightweight to move, but safer than Cavaletti. I believe one jump would have been less than £50, so maybe if you get your money back you could look at something like that from a manufacturer who is more trustworthy!

Caveletti are lethal. If you can get your money off her get some ordinary poles and some plastic jump blocks. Not only can they be dangerous for the pony but I can tell you from experience that if you fall off and land on to of the cross at the end of the jump it hurts!

Many poles come with a 'split' in them. The split occurs naturally in the wood, it's call 'shake' & is caused whilst the tree it came from is being buffetted in the wind. I bought 10 jump poles some years ago & several of them had shake splits.

Wood is a natural product and will split as it dries out. It depends how much it is split though. But as you didn't get what you ordered I would request they fetch it back. I don't like cavaletti's either, if your horse trips over it the pole never drops to the ground for safety. I hope that bit makes sense.

I bought twelve poles from an agricultural supplier and none were split and I would not have accepted then if they had been. Clearly a split pole is weaker than one which not split, and if it gets hit while jumping (when!!) it is far more likely to break.

Splitting as they weather and you've had them a while, maybe. Split on delivery, no.

Thank you for all your replys, i have messaged back the seller & said i want a refund the pole should not be split as makes it weak & will rot easy + i ordered 12ft not 8ft she said she thought i was on about something else? & if i phone any timber merchant they will tell me the pole will split in the heat, to me thats not much cop it is? pretty much im being silly she says & will only refund £35 but wont collect until a few weeks, my order below

Hi can i please then order x 2 X ends (A pair) & 1 pole @ 12ft which you say is a calvetti, in colours pink & black for delivery please, if you could please let me know when it will be ready for delivery etc.. Thank you

Seller said will only refund £35 should i really have to loose out on £15 because she did not read order correctly???

I don't think you should lose out by £15 for this. How did you order these - and how did you pay?

She has a page on facebook saw pics of others but not mine as was made to order, £35 for the set & £15 delivery, paid in cash she put it on the drive paid her & she went really quickly i didnt check until she had left, i knew she was running late for work so presumed thats why she went quickly, she thinks im being silly about the splits as she keeps saying its normal, she said this...

The splits in the pole are not massive splits and only a couple of mm deep. The poles are tanalised and it's because they are tanalised that they split in the heat. Please feel free to phone any timber merchant who will tell you that they will do that but it will not harm the pole

i do kind of agree on the splits TBH. I have bought 2 sets of jumps from 2 diff manufacturers over 16 years and a few splits only mm deep would not worry me especially if they are treated and painted too.

the length is a totally different thing though and if you definitely ordered 12ft you are owed a full refund on that basis.

IME small splits in wooden jump poles are completely normal, they generally appear at the ends.

However if you ordered 12ft and got 8ft then that is your basis for return

She's refunding the price of the item, postage was still a cost to her so I doubt you'll get that back.

Just to clarify, I would not call anything that was less than 20mm deep along at least a third of the length of a pole a 'split'.

Have you got your money back yet?

I bought some poles from a timber supplier today and asked about this

My poles are fencing posts available with or without a point, chap says splits are pretty normal and looking through the pile i would agree with him

He said that he would expect jump poles sold by 'proper' show jump suppliers to be carefully selected not to have more than superficial 'splits' but would be a bit more pricey

He said that most people (like me) go for the cheaper option

The splits in the pole are not massive splits and only a couple of mm deep.

Ah, well that is not what I would call a "split" either.

If you ordered 12ft though and she delivered 8ft, and if you did not examine and "accept" the goods on arrival then she would be liable for costs of delivery and pick up as the goods were not as described.

If it were me I would send it back, and buy a small jump stand and poles, or blocks and poles, as they are not such a trip hazard and are safer anyway. Or, if it too much faff and you want to use it, keep it, and maybe ask for a discount as it was not as described?

She has agreed to take back & replace for a 12ft non split pole, that was over a week ago & heard nothing now back from her!, She said they were a couple of mm they are all over the pole & all the way along it :-( x

Our Pony Club have over 100 rails and rarely do we find splits in them.

Your order was for a 12' rail and that is where your legal entitlement lies.

Under consumer laws she has failed to provide goods to the standard required, tell her you will report her if your order is not fixed straight away. If you ordered on Facebook, you could also 'name & shame'.

Like others have said though Canaletto are not the safest of jumps, they are banned at Pony Club in NZ because they can roll and the ends can break ribs with ease.

Some plastic jump stands and I find 10' poles easiest to work with at home. Old oil drums and the cup hooks you can get for them make good jump stands too.

The neatest novel thing I saw recently was using two potties to support the rail for trotting poles, they lift the rail off the ground and also secure it so it doesn't roll easily.
