Hi, i have just joined but thought i would ask for some advice.

I have just bought a pony for my daughter to ride first ridden next season. She is six years old but happy to walk, trot, canter jump etc. My problem is her old pony was just a pony club pony so we have never done any showing at all. The pony has been there done that and will help her (She changes leg at canter if my daughter gets it wrong!)

How do i go about joining bsps etc and will i cope against people who do nothing but show? I am a beginner to this but thought i would try lead rein this weekend and work on first ridden. Can anyone give me advice about first ridden, what she should wear etc to look the part and how good she should be before we try bigger shows.

Any help welcome!!:):)

Get experience at local shows first before BSPS, but go to watch at BSPS to see how its done! Turnout depends on type of pony and class, M+M, hunter pony, etc.

A lead rein pony should have perfect manners and go with the handler on the end of the lead rein which attaches to the noseband. A first ridden will walk and trot in a group and may canter in the individual show.

Hope this helps.

Hi Uandie. My cousin competes first ridden. We home produce - not everyone that competes eat/sleep/breathe showing :) There are plenty of children who do pony club that show as well.

When you take her to do lead rein, have a look at the fr classes :) There is also such a thing as a "first year first ridden" class which would be a good step up from leadrein. Your daughter can gain experience in this as there will be plenty of people her age doing it also so there's not much pressure on her as the fr where there will be older/more experienced children riding. It would also be a good oppurtunity for her to gain confidence and work on how to do her show. The judges in fyfr are usually a bit more forgiving and will give your daughter advice :)

The only way she'll learn and improve is to practice and the most important thing is that she enjoys it
