Advice on loan horse problems

When the owner said she has someone coming to view the horse I would put money on the fact there never was anyone just the owner hoping it might tug at your heart strings and you would buy the horse.

I would contact the owner , do you have email then you have it in writing but quicker than post. State the horse needs a vet as she is lame and in pain. Your not willing to stand by and let her suffer.

I would keep to the original agreement and again put in writing 4 weeks notice and arrange to have the horse transported back at your costs.

'can i ask why, if she is selling the horse you loan, you did not consider buying the mare yourself? '

Because as much as I care for her I am realistic that I cannot afford any major vets fees and if I was to have my own horse I would most definitely be insuring it.

If you had bought her you could have insured her and even if insured there is an excess so you can't usually claim everything back.

Poor mare, she clearly needs a vet

Owner sounds awful tbh.you asked for a vet to come at the first lameness.
It's her horse, she is utterly responsible for not acting on your observations.
Tbh I think she should take the horse back immediately.....

Tiffany there is a big difference between buying a 17 year old horse with prior problems and buying something younger. There will be exclusions on the former - possibly many given the age of the horse. It would be much easier to get reasonable insurance with more coverage for the latter

I dont blame the OP for not buying the horse!

I was in a similar situation a few years back with my last loan horse, he was on and off lame for the year I had him I only managed to ride like 10times it was agreed between us and written in the contract that I was to pay the vet bills unless it was something to do with his previous injury we payed off our final bill with the vets then I gave the owner my 4 weeks notice as stated in our contract, as I was unable to keep him. She'd not come to see him in any of this time either! She never returned my calls/texts/emails nothing so with a week to go before he was due to be returned I'd agreed with the yard I got him from that he would be returned there (as she was still a livery there with her other 2 horses) I then wrote her a letter stating that he would be returned to said yard on this date and if she didn't respond then I would contact the appropriate people stating that she was an unfit owner who didnt give 2 hoots about my loan horse or her other 2. Sure enough 2 days before he was due to go back she responded to my letter saying that there was no need to do that and she'd be at the yard on Saturday when I dropped him off.

I felt bad about dumping him back on her but he was her horse and her responsibility at the end of the day.

Good luck however it turns out
xx

An update for those that have replied and given me some very good and helpful advice.....

I spoke to the owner after my post on here. After a few unpleasant texts which on the whole I did not reply to she text at midnight stating that she was going to be arranging transport as soon as possible and would be picking up all of the horses tack and items today. She came today with her friend and collected all her belongings and said that she would let me know when the transport was arranged.

I am trying to let my head stay in control as I know it is the right decision and am more than aware that once gone she is no longer my responsibility but I still feel very sad. :(

Thanks for your advice people x

Glad it's being sorted. Bit of a cheek to have gotten tack etc ahead of sorting horse out though. I'd be inclined to charge livery if still in your loan time and can't use but I'm just a cranky person!
Glad it has been sorted though, good luck horse hunting :)

I have to wait until she can be vetted, the weather will hopefully improve enough come Friday so that she can be seen in which case i could get her this weekend, yipee!! Otherwise I have to wait until conditions improve and get the vetting done next week.

I do have an extra stable on hold just in case Blondie's still here when she arrives.
