I have been offered 60% lou for my horse. If I decide you go this route can you get cover for any type of liability or is it better to go for rider policy only.
I havent decided what to do .My horse has coffin joint soft tissue damage and tendon injury but he is ins companies worst nightmare as he has had lots of problems in last 2 years.Spavin op, ligament ,tendon, splints and more ins co. must be fed up with us
Any thoughts any one .?
Im trying weigh up all pros and cons better to ask questions now rather than make wrong decision.

When a friend of mine claimed LOU for a show pony she had (damaged its leg in the field). A year and a half later it came sound and so we brought it back into work and sold it as a riding club allrounder. The lady has since got insurance for the horse, obviously the leg in question is excluded and it cannot be insured for lou.

Hope that answers the question

my horse became LOU last week from a suspensory ligament issue in his leg, he has been re-insured for 3rd party liability, worth 500quid in the event of his death, no loss-of-use anymore and drastically reduced cover for vets fees (that dont cover any ligament!)

Edit: Oh but i do have the payout money stashed in a savings account for him that i will use to 'self-insure' i.e. can use that money to pay for anything he might need

Well, everything on poor Ollie is pretty much excluded now anyway, so I guess reduced vet fees arent that big of an issue?

I think if he is being turned away, you can insure him as a companion (v cheap) and then say that you are riding again and see what extra they charge. Could you ask the insurance company what they would cover him for?

How is he by the way?

Although that seems a good idea I will only be paid £1400 so with my boys history dont think that will last long. What sort of ins payment do you pay for 3rd party and what company do you use I could ring them for a quote before I make a decision.I will look into this option thanks.

Thats really positive news.Im hoping my horse will come sound but insurance company made the offer because he has cost close to £7000 in two years. If he recovers the treatment will be more costly than the offer of £1400 so I can see why they have offered its more viable.I want to keep him just trying to weigh all the options up.I could just leave the tendon to heal naturally but will still have exclusions to consider.thanks

As i paid my insurance annualy this year (in April) and made the claim in August (after just a year of treatment etc) my insurance is actually 'continuing' albeit with the reduced cover, until it is due for renual (april).
So i have no idea what the premium would/will be. I'll be interested to hear if you find out tho.
I'm with NFU

LOL need a sense of humour at times like these.!
He actually has only one exclusion on back legs ligaments and tendon (3 years ago)but once front legs are excluded then its pretty much a waste of time.the spavin op was a success and splints all gone they were probably due to his hoof conformation although second one was the kick injury.
Good idea for companion insurance but then I would need to wait until treatment has taken place.I could do that and rider insurance although I should have that with my daughters horse.
Hes being really good hes restricted and stabled at night .All the swelling has gone in tendon , coffin joint swelling has gone too since hes had eggbar shoes and pads. He seems comfortable.I going to ask for vets opinion wrote to him this morning .Just wanted some good advice form h and h .You lot keep me sane

My feelings to but they wont agree to tendon treatment until they have seen all documentaion inc bills.I really dont want to inflate my vets bills with intensive treatment if they refuse to pay. Its too late after hes had treatment if they wont agree to cover me.

If he is covered for the treatment and it is going to cost more than £1,400 then I wouldnt take the offer.

after a years worth of treatment for one thing (in my case - dodgy suspensory ligament), my insurance co (NFU) would have stopping paying out for vet bills etc for all ligaments and excluded them from future policy's.....
the OP insurance may be different tho

Glad the swelling is down.

tell me about it - got to canter on the one with KS on the weekend (was so excited and happy that I almost cried) and then he had a swollen fetlock and filled leg yesterday so now is on box rest and antibiotics. Figures.

I wouldnt go LOU right now - get him through the treatment and reassess. Just make sure he is going to be covered for the treatment!

Oh thats bad news hope hes ok.Sods law with horses. So many highs and lows.
Just to set something straight I thought I had lou cover but it was missed argh the lou wont apply if he doesnt come sound after treatment its a one of offer.

From past experience I should have realised that the moment I am happy riding one of them, he will break.

I wouldnt take it - it is less than the treatment so good deal for them, not so much for you.

Must show how desperate they are - basically if a horse can be hacked in walk, most insurance companies still consider the horse has some use and therefore refuse to pay LOU out on a policy including it - here they are offering it to you without you even having the policy! They have definitely done the math!

I want him sound and will give him every chance.Hes already had far more chances than most horses.
I agree with your comments re the maths its a good deal for them .
I have to stop spending on this horse at some stage the only thing that tempts me is maybe recovering some of my losses. If he has to go to happy hacker home later in life then I will have recouped some of the losses.
Oh what a dilemma

Yes, but you will have to pay more for the treatment.

Otherwise you accept the payment now, and then sell/loan to a happy hacker home. Although I am pretty sure being a LOU would make it harder to sell/loan him, especially in these times when you can get ex-racers for £500. It is hard I know - if it were me I would see how he goes with this treatment. If it doesnt work I would probably just chuck him in a field for a year and see if he comes sound. If he does, then I would see how much work he was capable of. If not, and he is happy in his field, he would just be my pet and then I would get another to ride.

I have had to go through this scenario with my two as well and this is what I decided I would do with them.

Hes not going anywhere at the moment the worst case scenario is ex racer home, then I can always visit. He ll get the treatment and see how it goes.I can ride my daughter s although shes mad we love her.So many things running round my head and you have all given good advice thanks
