Advice on maturity in welshies

Hi,

I was looking for some general information on welshies! I have 2 year old welsh section D. Hes my first welsh! At the moment he stands at 13.2hh to make 15hh. I was wondering at what age they mature in height, as i am sceptic that hes not going to make 15hh.

I'd be surprised if he made 15hh - sorry! My section C was 13hh as a 2 yr old and as an adult stands 13.2 (full up actually most people think he is 14hh but hes not).

Thats not to say yours won't grow more than 2inches. What sort of build is he? Mine is very chunky thankfully.
 
Hes only a slim breed. I have been wondering as he hasn't seemed to have grown and ive had him nearly a year now. Think I may have to consider selling him :(
 
i have 2 yr old sec d aswell, he's 3 in may and currently standing at 13.3hh, he is very bum high though and ive been told to expect him to make 14.3hh. they can continue to grow until 5/6 years old though. at 2 years old they still have a lot of growing to do
 
Fingers crossed then he may grow! will be a shame if he doesn't as hes a lovely little lad, with a great temperament. However would make someone a great pony if he doesn't. x
 
Echo the previous comments, they are late to mature, although they tend to reach full height about 5/6 they will then switch and grow out :D

The Welsh Cob was about 14hh when I bought him, rising 3. I haven't had a stick on him but he is taller than Miss_C's Genie who has been measured at 15hh. I must say 15hh does sound a bit ambitious with your wee chap...how is he bred?
 
mine continued growing in height until he was 7. between 4 and 7 he grew 3 inches! and didn't mature width ways until nearly 9 He was the slimmer type too, well until he got to 9 lol But still wouldn't have classed him as stockier type.
In fact I know of 3 that grew a good few inches after they were 3 1/2
 
Mine is a small Welshie (not quite 14.2) but she rides very big indeed.
She has only just started 'furnishing up' now - she will be 7 in May.

With Welshies don't be in too much of a hurry to back them - those clever brains need time to mature as well as the physical frame. I backed mine at 4, though she'd been longreined at 3 and she's just started 'proper' fittening and work this spring - it has been worth the wait as she is turning into a lovely ride with a great attitude.

Treat them any other breed, by this I mean you do according to the individual. Mine was backed at 3 and hacked, he was quite mature as a 3yr old and I wanted to crack on with him. He was turned away as a 4yr old for a good 4 months (maybe more) by this point he got rather lanky so I thought it best to let the body catch up with the legs :D
 
thanks, hes quite immature as he had been stabled 24/7 by his previous owner due to lack of turnout. he is out 24/7 now and loving it. he has a lovely temperament and is craving to do something. I was going to start the basics after may, then progress to sitting on him and walking round by late summer, then turn him away for the winter and start again early next year. He has been very well handled by the previous owner and is very level headed for his age. nothing fazes him at all!
 
My mare was 14.2hh at 2.5yrs old and she is just under 15hh at 4.5yrs old. I believe she was around the 14hh mark at 2 so I would gather from that your lad could make 15hh at full maturity as I Holly looks to have a little more growing to do yet!
