i'm riding a pony that is used in riding lessons, but he is a bit of a tank and you have to boot him a bit to get him going
i'm not keen on booting him or smacking him with a whip, but so far that is the most effective, but it only gets him plodding along in the next pace
i have also tried a schooling whip which does help but not a lot
any suggestions?
thanks :)

When I rode an ex riding school pony for my friend he was as lazy as they come (and also very stubborn at times). We used a lot of transitions to keep him listening right from the start of getting on and if he didn't respond to the leg we'd back it up with the use of a schooling whip as soon as he ignored the aid. Also try doing different things like poles and other school movements so he's not plodding around in a circle for the ride :) Usually at the end of the ride he was going forwards with a lot of energy and sometimes was hard to stop.

Although when we started to do more interesting things like hacking and cross country he really sped up quite a lot as it was a good change for him to get out in the world once and a while :p

When I rode a RS horse he was exactly like that... The only way to get him moving was to really excite him :D I used to use little nudges and 1/2 halts they really got him moving. Also the good old pony club kick, you would use a gentle nudge then a little harder one then another etc. then if that didn't work you would have I use the stick :( I used to get him going really nicely though and I feel that it was te bond I tried to create :) good luck and remember that they all have their slow days too.. Like us really!
