im really gutted to be selling my beloved boy and not sold a horse before, anyway someone came to try him today and really liked him but wants him on a weeks trial before she commits to buy him. what are peoples thoughts on this?
He would be 45 mins away and she will leave a 50% deposit? should i let her take him or not? anyone have any experience of this?
Thanks

Nope, what happens if he gets injured? Tell her she can come and see him as many times as she likes, but not take him off the yard, it will show him better anyway as he won't be unsettled!

yeah, she did say she will be added on her insurance but think i would feel better if he was where i can see him, although my horse is a total sweetheart and they seem genuine i dont really know them from adam. But as ive never sold a horse before i was thinking, is this type of thing common practice?

it does seem to be quite common for people to ask these days and I do understand their reasons but as TSH said it is just too big a risk. Its not just the insurance and the fact you don't know them but also the risk that they could potentially ruin your horse and then change their minds leaving you with a horse who is worth alot less once he returns home. I would agree that if they are genuinely interested in your horse they will come and try him a few more times just to make sure he is the one for them but do not let him off the yard.I'm sure that these people may well seem genuine but given you don't know them there is a chance that they could take your horse and never be seen again.

It's not overly common for it to actually happen. Yes, people ask and sometimes owners oblige, but anyone with any sense would refuse.

I'm not sure what she means by adding him to her insurance. Can she insure him as you presumably already have him insured on your own policy. Also most policies have a 14 day (or so) initial exclusion period so the policy might not actually provide any real cover for the one week trial anyway.

Hiya, I'm looking for a horse at the moment and would only expect to have a horse on trial if I was buying from a dealer and then it would be a case of "exchange not refund", so no I don't think you should let your horse go on trial for a week, I've been looking for several months now and had forgotten that second hand car dealers have more ethics than horse dealers ! Good luck

yes he is insured by me, thanks guys think ill tell her i'm more than happy for her to come and try him as many times as she likes at the yard but he aint going off on trial. Gosh selling is horrible! think im too soft

I am looking, and would be delighted if an owner allowed me to have a potential horse on trial, but it very rarely happens, and I would not allow it if I was selling one of mine.

If someone is genuinely interested in your horse, they will return to try it with you.

I didnt let either of the horses Ive sold go on trial. I knew both horses were genuine and both new owners are happy.

I had my current horse on trial but I bought him from a (very small time) dealer who was selling him on behalf of a private seller, and I consider myself very lucky to have got that.

Personally if I was selling I wouldn't let a horse go on trial.

I recently bought a pony, which I paid for in full but she gave me a weeks warranty on her. I was pretty certain she was going to be right for me but it gave me peace of mind that I could return her if we weren't compatable. The person I bought her off wasn't a dealer.
Could you not come to a similar arrangement?
