Advice on sharing / loaning and how much?

If i was OP, I would look for someone to just keep neddy ticking over and cover maybe 1/3 or even 1/4 of the costs, someone who didnt want to school/compete, for piece of mind that neddy wasnt going to be ruined....... but thats just me!

As I have said, low levels is riding club and the local riding clubs are excellent. If the rider was good enough I would not have a problem with them doing that. I wouldnt just go and say 'I get to hunt this weekend', I would organise it well in advance. I dont need anyone to improve his schooling, he is already a schoolmaster, just dont want someone letting him go round like he wants to, which is ploddy with his head in the air!
Can I just say, I think you are very very lucky and in a great position.... but I think you're one of only a few in such a great situation.
I agree I could just get a happy hacker, that is a consideration.
 
Lucky........... your really not wrong, i couldnt ask for anything more from my horse share but neither could the owners of me..... i do her other horse for her in winter on days she cant make it up etc, she actually gets to ride her other horse now, so it works both ways!

I would seriously look itno a happy hacker......... good luck with your search anyway... and the PGCE!!
 
I have a couple of sharers for my dad's horse, he's a bfg! Well i've arranged with them that they pay £10 per ride in summer (when he's out 24/7) and £20 per ride in winter (more expensive) months. They seem really happy with this. They sort out their own insurance, my boys are insured, we have a contract signed and hey i get some company out riding!!

They are mostly happy hackers, but one of them has asked to have some lessons on him as he's a schoolmaster, and i've said great! no probs.
As my boys are kept at home, they don't have to do any chores... but just to give you an idea.
There are masses of people who can't afford/take responsibility/have time for their own horse, but really enjoy going out hacking 2-3 times a week.
I've also said that they can come with me to some sponsored rides, events etc.
I put an ad on www.horsetoloan.com and got a huge amount of calls! Make sure you vet them on the phone, and take it step by step, but there are some lovely people out there, living very close by! Perfect!

Good luck on finding someone really nice! And be specific, explain everything from the beginning, so there's no grey areas!

And I think any sharer of my horse would be lucky as well... Im not exaggerating when I say how good he is, although I am biased!

I'm an experience rider ex horse owner and I now pay £150 per month for sharing a horse 3 days a week including 1 weekend day.

The fee was orignally £200 per month but we reduced it and I spend £40pm on lessons instead which arguably benefit the horse anyway. I have a beautiful horse to enjoy and the owner gets a fit horse with regular schooling to event. I dont compete much (would like to do more), thats the only slight downside.

BUT, I am in London and everything is hideously expensive AND he's on full livery. I pay to ride not muck out!! How much the saddle cost is irrelevant. As an owner you need to provide well fitting, safe tack but if you blew the budget thats your responsibility. Why should your sharer pay for it?

To have the above sort of budget you are looking at a sharer who is probably a professional who earns enough to pay that amount as such (and like me) they are unlikely to have the time to do such chores. I think you will be lucky to find someone who will do both.

ERm..... regarding the saddle I was just pointing out how much equipment costs I didnt blow the budget!! And the horse cost an awful lot as well. so if I rented a house should I just pay the bills and not the rent??
the point is it costs a lot to set yourself up with a very decent horse, the tack costs etc are NOT being passed onto the sharer, as I said in the original post, my livery costs are very expensive and on a parr with London prices.
During the summer there are practically no chores to do as hes mostly out, and in Winter I muck out and do most jobs in the morning so its minimal chores. Im a professional and I manage to see to my horse every single day without fail and have done for the last 4 years!! I dont agree that I would need a professional worker to get £150 a month - when I was working part time about 5 years ago I paid £120 a month towards a share horse as it was something I wanted to do and I did 3 days a week and got a nicely schooled horse which was far more fun than riding school which was costing £80 a month or so anyway!!
