As some of you know we are moving our horses to a private yard next week. Now we have been looking at shavings to order and I am horrified by the price. We currently have to use Bliss which is £6 a bale and I was sure that we would be able to find something near £4.50. However, our current supplier is offering us non biodegradabe (as Bliss is biodegradeable I think) for £6.30 a bale.

Does anyone know anywhere in the North West where I can get cheaper shavings. I am not too bothered about what type. Just looking to cut costs a little bit.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Don't know about the North West, but in the Midlands it's hard to find anything under £6 these days... Horrendous price if you ask me.

We now put shavings on top of the rubber mats and then a full straw bed on top. The shavings catch the wee and we muck out fully every day. Does save a small fortune compared to a full shavings bed I must admit.

I think shavings in general are expensive I'm afraid. If you buy the really cheap ones they tend to be quite dusty and flat imo. I use shavings from Gibsons and but 2 pal;lets at a time so get a bit of discount. If you have the space to store them. I think we paid arouns 6 quid a bale last time.

DONT buy cardboard! PLEASE for my sanity.. and for yours. seems to leave floors slippy, and is a pain to muck out! i dont know who supplies it, but my YO uses "Stable Dry" if you google it i'm sure youll get something back!

Global shortage of softwood. Similar to hie in price of bread caused by shortage of grain - when was the last time you saw Kingsmill for under £1?

HUH

I want to move my horsey to shavings (bedmax) but just cannot afford it...esp. with the cost of mats.

Might do when the price normalises, if it does...

Over £7 for Snoflake now.
Others don't fluff up as much, so you get through more.
Thanks goodness for rubber matting and half a bed.

In Shropshire I'm paying £5.70-£6.00 per bale for shavings, the prices of all the branded bedding are similar too. Even bog standard Countrywide shavings are nearly £6 now.

Think ahead to next winter now!! if you think getting shavings was bad this year, everything points to it being as bad if not worse next winter. Club together and buy as many as you can afford/need before all the prices go up again in winter and supplies get tighter. We are nearly in May and all brands seem to still be difficult to source and so have not started to build up summer stocks yet.
