Up to now have only ever used studs on the outside edge of the hind shoes. Have been wondering if I should have them put on the outside of the fronts as well - what does anybody think? The horses are all used for eventing.

I always stud up all round, but have recently stopped using studs on the inside of the heel so now just have 1 stud per foot (sounds like you do too !?) on the outside...this on the advice of my vet and farrier

Thing is though, if the horse isn't slipping you probably don't need them anyway....and they do produce concussion so shouldn't be used willy nilly

my farrier told me they should always be 2 in a shoe or the coffin joint get buggered. he's a remedial farrier.

There are loads of conflicting opinons on this one. The thought behind having a single stud in the outside of the shoe is that the horses foot naturally twists a little when it hits the ground...it's meant to...and by only having a single stud, that requirement is not compromised

Thats why you stud according to ground condition, If you have to stud in fron at all on firm ground, you put tiny spiky studs that sink, so not making the foot uneven, wetter weather can take bigger studs cos there is more give in the ground. 2 stops the foot dead.... one if correcty judged still allows some movement, but there are arguements for both sides...

solve it all by taking gg hunting then you don't need to stud up horses as much. I event/hunt and try and not use unless ground conditions are very bad, and i only have them in back , 2 per shoe

I was always told to use 2 studs in each and the same size/type as they can twist their tendons if they're uneven. I used to just use hinds and no fronts but I when I did put fronts in my horses jumped much better, apparently fronts are just as important if the ground is bad as they can lose confidence in jumping if their front feet slip as they land, especially for sj and jumpoffs.

I stud for dressage on grass too, 2 behind, small blunt on inside, bigger on outside, very small sharp points on outside fronts. Have same studs in jumping, check between phases that you haven't lost one.
