I have a very good doer - who has terrible skin problems - seems to be very prone to mud fever/ has a chronic skin infection since before I got her (finally nearly cleared up) and I would like to support her skin from the inside rather than just plastering stuff on the outside.

She currently gets a small scoop of hi fi good doer just to mix supplements in with - she's on magnesium oxide, teaspoon of salt (she had a huge cresty neck when I got her and this was recommended to reduce it, also the fields are ex dairy and have been fertilised regularly so the salt will apparently help balance the potassium/ magnesium ratio). In addition to that i've fed her oilovite or winter coat summer shine which are both meant to be good for the skin. However, with some reading I was wondering whether just giving her some oil (not sure which) would do the same job, and think I read somewhere brewers yeast is good? However, as already said, she's a very good doer and I want to help her coat without chucking loads of condition on her cos i've worked really hard to get her weight down (over 60kg so far!) and don't want it going back on!

Thanks :)

I wouldn't give linseed to a good doer, but brewers yeast is fab stuff. I've had my cob on it for years now as I was told to use it for his scouring (he's intolerant to sugar) and the added bonus is his coat is absolutely blooming.

That's my worry with feeding an oil rather than an oil based supplement as everything i've read says they put condition on and I really don't want to do that! I've worked too hard to get where we are! But then I would assume the oil based supplement would have some oil in it!? I'm so confused!

Where is the best place to get Brewers Yeast from? And how much would I need to feed her?

I've shopped around and always go back to Feedmark for mine because it's consistantly good quality...once I thought the batch was off and they instantly replaced it without question, turned out my cob was being fussy and it was the feed he'd gone off not the supplement!! It's next day delivery for around £20 which usually lasts me nearly 3 months so doesn't break the bank. I feed a scoop as provided can't remember the exact weight. It does say it helps with weight gain but I've not seen any difference with my cob.

Will have a look at feedmark then as think I may have a money off voucher somewhere! Can you buy it from the high street so to speak - people shops - is it any cheaper or is it a different grade or something? Yup, desperate to help her skin without any extra weight, blinkin cobs! :D

i swear by this ebayer,
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/valleyviewanimalfeeds
she has sorted out my 2 horses 1 has seedy toe other has skin probs, send her a message explaining and she will email you back with what to use, she has amazing stuff.
goodluck, i really do know how costly and nerve wrecking having a horse with skin problems is, her supplements is cheap and great, buy a few packs and she discounts for postage. my horse loves it, also my 2 are but on the chubby side so i only give 1 handful of meal with 100g supplements each day they love it.
