my native is hogged to keep sweet itch manageable but i think next year i'll try and get a mane out of her!
my 'action plan' will be:
possibly feed her 'think fly'
rug from march onwards
sweet itch hood
apply kill itch (contains benzyl benzoate)
mane/tail washed once a week to get out the dandruff stuff
and if possible in during the day to avoid the worst of it
