Hi all,

I have a 15.1hh and a 3 yr old Richardson Supreme Advance trailer. Then we went and bought a 17.1hh for my OH. I really dont want to travel him in my Richardson as it is the same size as an Ifor 505 really.

So we have decided to sell our Richardson and buy a bigger trailer. We dont want to spend lots mor money, having just bought the horse. We reckon we will get about £3k for the Richardson (its in excellent condition) - so the question is.... what is the best trailer to get for a 17.1hh???

We had an Ifor 510 a while ago but the ramp is on the road side and its an alu floor (Richardson has curb side ramp and plastic floor with lifetime guarantee). These are the two main reasons for buying a Richardson.

We like the Ifor 511 but arent happy to spend more money at the mo even if you can get the ramp on the curb side.

I like the look of the Bateson trailers - but my concern is the headroom internally (7'3) - is this big enough for a 17.1hh??

I also obviously love the Richardson Supreme Grande as ts a big version of mine - but they seem very hard to come by!!

What do you all think?? Should we just bite the bullet and get a 510 so we can atl east travel him over the summer? Or should we consider something else??

Bateson say their trailers, Deauville & Ascot are suitable for up to 17h.....I suppose it dfepends how your horse's head carriage is as to wether they would be suitable for your horse.

The 510 IW would be suitable, I appreciate the ramp is on the wrong side for you but if you are on a limited budget then you may have to make some concessions.

Id say Bateson all the way.

I had the Bateson Deuville and my 17.1hh Warmblood fitted in it with loads of room to spare.

Batesons are much better built than the Ifors and I defo wouldnt recommend one of the newer Ifors, they are no wheres near as well built as the older Ifors and they have had loads of problems with them.

I'll second this, my 17' 1" travels fine in my Bateson, which I've had for 8 yrs now, no problems at all with - and that statement has probably put the kiss of death on it

Rumour has it that the 511s now have had the issues sorted and are better than the older 511s.

I have to say my boy travelled really well in the 511 we borrowed.

At least if you opt for an Ifor 510 you won't lose any money on it as they hold their prices incredibly well.

My OH's horse is 17.1h and travels in my Bateson Ascot - he used to travel in an Ascot weekly for hunting with his old owner.

Thanks.

I might go and look at the second hand Deauville I have seen for sale then.

Another option wouldbe the Equi Trek... any thoughts?

I dont mind paying out more for these as it means I will probably go off my other idea of a lorry (and more expense doing yet another test- already had to do the trailer test!!).

Any thought on the Equi Trek Sports Treka? Have found one of these for £3500 and Im not sure if my 17.1hh will fit (again manufacturer says 2 x16.2hh)

what about the richardson supreme ultra they will take 17.1hh, there is a second hand one on horsequest ATM., they are a littel bit higher, wider and longer than the 510

I'm looking at the Equitreks at the moment too, the L models take up to 18h and they travel backwards in them, which is supposed to keep the heart rate down.

I used to have a 510 but my 16.3h lad had problems balancing in it with the partition in (fine without).

Have you considered the Fautras trailers too?

My horse is 17.2 and fits in the 510 and 511 fine. Plenty or room and hes not the smallest of horses either.
Cannot comment on any others as not used them.

trailer wise id travel in nothing other than my ifor 510 however, here is some food for thought,

there is no difference in height between the 505 and 510 - it is the length and width which make it bigger!!!

I have a Fautras Promax 2

Superb road holding, really well built and carries my heavyweight 17hh easily.

Would really highly recommend

thanks guys - im thinking Bateson or Equi trek.

So next question.... would a 17.1hh fit happily into a Sports Treka? Equi trek says it designed for 16.2hh. I have found a M one for £3500.

I know the L fits big horses fine but would he go in a M?? He is 17.1hh but short backed - he just has long gangly legs!! What is the biggest anyone has travelled in an Equi trek M?

Also - Does anyone have a Bateson Deauville they can comment on? Not yet had a look at one and wondering about the desing and usability of the saddle racks at front. I know the Ascot is a lockable cupboard but deauville is just a rack and cover. Still it saves space in the boot of the car!!
