Advice on Vets...

hello....

after yesterday's bombshell from the vet, i've spoken to my new and so far lovely farrier about what they've said.

he has said he very much doubts it's lami - so feel better bout that.
he said it would be better to get her xray'd sooner rather than later.. but here's my dilema...

my vets are a small practice and the farrier hasn't worked with them before. then there is Liphook near by who could do the xrays and my farrier has worked alot with them.

what would you do??? farrier happy to work with either, just he knows Liphook and what a good reputation they have.

A second opinion never hurts and if you trust your farrier, then i would go on his advice to Liphook

TBH for important things I would only ever used a board certified vet - you find those at the hospital!

Liphook are fantastic (I worked there for several years!) but you will need your vet to refer you to them - he shouldn't have a problem with this if you ask him to do it.

oh - thanks...

you may know... the farrier said xrays should be done sooner than later, to rule out fracture. are they usually easy to read? and can you send the pictures themselves for 2nd opinion? didn't realise you needed to be refered. is all thier work referals?

I don't know Liphook, but from being referred to Rossdales their x ray machine was so much clearer than the local mans. Go for it, and good luck.

Liphook are my vets and I must say fab!

Also they can do x rays at your yard, so no travelling. Finally if you need a specialist farrier for any reason they have one on site! Good luck

You do need a referral with teh Liphook, unless your a 'client' but if you can get referred then LIPHOOK ALL THE WAY!!!!!

I was so pleased with the way the dealt with Trike, i cant recommend them highly enough.

I thought u can get portable x-rays (byers and shotters did 10 years ago...) now days...

Recommended Liphook.

That doesn't matter - as long as they are (or have) a good equine vet. Presumably you have used them a number of times and are happy with them and are confident of their advice and treatment.

The only reason why I wouldn't use them was if they weren't an equine practice - but then I wouldn't have used them in the first place.

hello!!

after chatting things over - mostly to myself, i've decided i will use my vets practice - they are equine, however i'm going to get the top vet to do the xrays and treat her ongoing. she's not insured for htis treatment and i don't want some other vet missing something and then having to start all over again - i can;t afford that. they do i htink have a mobile xray machine so will not need to transport her.

like all vets practices, some don;t get it right all of the time. i know the vet that saved Ludo when he tied up had missed something in another horse she was looking after.... I just don't want them to get what is wrong with bonnie wrong...!

Reading the other replies you are likely to get much more satisfactory foot xrays from a permanent xray machine rather than a mobile one if you can take your horse in to the vets. There are quite a number of standard shots to take and if they are done on site they can be developed and checked and if necessary repeated there and then. A few practices do have a mobile xray and developing unit but not many.

Personally if in any doubt, I would use Liphook. They are a big practice and have some pretty decent vets there.

agree really, however it would mean having to have a referal as they aren't MY vet....
