advice on wet muddy legs

if you are able to keep them in (not sure if you have stable) best thing to do is let mud dry then brush off the mud. use keratex mud fever powder. its also a barrier. you apply it to dry clean legs and it will protect the skin underneath. its fantastic stuff.

Isn't keratex fantastic stuff ? It makes life so simple. I sprinkle it on every other morning after having brushed off the previous nights dried mud with a dandy brush. Her white socks are sparkling white underneath.

Hosing off legs is so yesterday.:D

I've got a welsh section D (he's my second one), also have had a TB and a Welsh type pony years ago. I never, ever washed their legs (apart from maybe before a show) and have never had a problem with any of them having mud fever.

I have consistently always washed my horses legs off, esecially when they are soaking wet and muddy. His legs are already wet so I don't see the difference of rain wet or hose pipe wet.
I found if he did get mud fever, it depended a lot on which yard I was on. Some yards he got it bad, but others he never suffered at all
I do think that land that had had cows on it seemed much worse for it, and other friends agreed. Anyone else found that link?

I hose mine off at night then slap on baby oil or pig oil when dry in the morning.
Do this every few weeks and find that the mud just slides off

seconded! i slap a bit of baby oil on so the wet and mud doesn't get down to the skin. When i bring them in, the mud literally does slide off and the next morning their legs are so clean and dry it looks as though they havent been out for a week!

Hear hear Maesfen, hibiscrub is too strong and used too frequently.

I also wash my boys legs so i can see if there are any nicks on his legs cos if he had any and was left overnight covered in mud i am sure they would be nice and infected in the morning. Towel drying does the trick for me and always has dne.
