Hi all, would like to thank you in advance for reading and for any advice..

Ive had my horse for 5 months, he is a 12 year old warmblood. His nature is so loving, loves hacking and generally the nicest horse you could ever wish to meet.. The thing is, this past week i have noticed a few changes to him, being:

Out hacking this weekend he was very joggy and silly, (he is excersised 5 times a week.) He also out of the blue had a huge bronking fit and then bolted with me. (Never happend before!) he is normally so laid back.

His behaviour in general has also been off this week.. Normally he comes straight up to me for a fuss, and is pleased to see me but yesterday and today i have had to chase him round with his headcollar to catch him!

A lady stopped me the other day to say as she was driving behind me she noticed his tail was too one side as he walked (potential back problem?)

And the thing thats worrying me the most,, his big brown kind eyes are different, hes showing alot of the whites to his eyes and he just seems overall to be on edge.,

There has been no change to feed etc and i have booked the back lady to come on saturday to him..

Really would like advice on this one, would you call a vet? Or do you think its stemming from back pain?

Help much appreciated! Thank you :)

hmm from what youve said it would suggest an issue in the back area, whether it be a sore back or a badly fitting saddle leading to a sore back, i wouldnt call a vet just yet, see what the back doc says and check the fit of your saddle, if no problems arise from either of these then it may be vet time

thats what i would do anyway :)

As his behaviour has changed that dramatically then I personally would also not ride him until after Saturday when the back lady comes - hopefully this will shed more light on the situation, it does sound pain related especially as it's so sudden. It's possible that he's put his back out or is sore somewhere, alternatively it could be that the saddle doesn't fit quite right and is pinching him somewhere - when was it last checked? I'd personally get the physio to check all over and get the saddle checked for now, before going down the vet route. Let us know how you get on x

Thank you so much for your replies everyone :)

Im definately not going to ride him until i find out whats wrong with him, just lots of attention for now!

His saddle is custom made and not very old but i will get the saddler out aswell as the back lady to check alls ok :)

He seems a little happier in himself for today so will hold out for the vet for now until his back is checked tomorrow, poorly boy just want to get him better!

Thank you all again, will keep you updated x

Get a blood test done. If there are raised liver enzymes then suspect mycotoxin poisoning.
There has been a massive rise in autumnal fungal spore poisoning over the last couple of years due to the damp conditions.
I am currently researching this subject, pm me for more info if you like.
