Hi there, I have finally taken the plunge and decided to register on here! I wanted to ask if anyone has any good ideas on how to stop my horse throwing his feed all over the floor at mealtimes? He is fed quite a lot for his size (one scoop nuts and one scoop chaff, twice a day, he is a 14.3hh lightweight TB x) because he doesnt hold weight very well and I am trying to build his topline? But he ends up throwing it around everywhere, it is driving me mad!

Good luck with that. My horse does the same thing and I've never been able to do anything about it. I stopped feeding her in a dish on the floor because she just overturned it first thing but even in a bucket, she grabs a mouthful and drops it everywhere, or bashes the bucket around so that it spills.

She's just a slob. :p

He has one of those black rubber feed skips, so I dont think it would really go into a tyre? Might give that a go though, and swap to an ordinary bucket, thanks :-)

Good Good ;):D

I would try feeding the nuts soaked on their own and the same with the chaff. Could be the texture of the feed?

Failing that I would add some large smooth pebbles in this bucket to slow him down. That may help?

Messy bugger :p

Ah yes ive got one like this, and the only difference soaking it seems to make is that it paints the floor with sloppy mash! Luckily ours will hoover up after himself so i dont tend to bother putting it in a tyre, but maybe a bucket that you can hang on the door may help?

My old horse did this, he would constantly tip up his bucket, so I found a metal bowl which was too heavy to tip up but was not very big, so he just shoved the food out of it. The best thing I found was a huge wide tub that some cattle feed had come in. He did tip it over occasionally but was no where near as bad as before. I think he just liked to have room to rummage through the food so he could pick out his fave bits first. So my advice is to find the biggest (as in wide) tub you can find.
