I hope that someone might have seen something like this before, because I am a bit baffled.

My foal is every now and again - maybe once every couple of weeks - has a kind of swelling come up on her cheek bone - so right out almost under her eye. One of my other horses every now and again does get her glands up - but this looks very different to that, as it over the cheek bone, not behind it. (My mare usually has her glands up sort of under her ears.)
These swellings are usually not that big, but big enough to be noticeable under her big wooly coat. I presume they aren't painful for her - she certainly doesn't mind if I manipulate the area around them and give them a quick prod!!

Anyway when I got my little girly in last night she had swellings on both sides of her face (usually they just come up on one side or the other), and they had extended up so there was swelling where I would think normally I would expect to see glands up. This swelling was much bigger than usual, but again it didn't appear to be painful. She was still her cheerful little self, and certainly wasn't off her food!!

Then this morning, as these swellings usually do when they have come before, there is no sign of them when i turn her out. Foal is happy little girly as usual, and was still "assisting" me with mucking out this morning.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I know sometimes that horses will get their glands up in spring time if the weather suddenly gets a lot milder, and I wondered if because the weather has been so mild all winter (i am in the far southwest) whether this is why this has happened.

Because it hasn't happened as a regular occurence and it doesn't seem to bother her, and they usually go over night I haven't spoken to a vet about this yet, but just thought that some nice person on here might know the cause of this.

Thanks for your help! And cookies for those that have managed to read this far!! Sorry it ended up being a bit rambly.

(Foal is 8 months old, weaned 2 months ago and had second flu and tet jab about 2 weeks ago.)

Thanks!!

Someone posted ages ago about these swellings and gave a reason, I just can't remember what it was!
I think it was an allergic reaction to something but can't think what, with any luck they may respond again. You haven't noticed anything new growing in the field she could be nibbling on?
Youngsters often get swellings on their faces high up, it's their teeth growing, then they go down again as they get older, we've had a few do it, but not as foals.
Sorry I can't help more..

thanks for your help - I have reposted it in breeding as well. I wasn't sure if you could just move the thread!

To the best of my knowledge there isn't anything new growing in the field - but will double check during daylight hours tomorrow afternoon while I'm having an afternoon off work!! Yay!!
Thanks
