Need some advice here please...Our beautiful 3 month old filly who, upto yet has been in good health. Then 11 days ago she didnt want to get up one morning and had a very swollen offside hind got her up and out and she was very lame, heat in foot/leg and seemed very quiet. Vet came pressed on her heel bulb and expressed quite a bit of pus and a grass seed which we assumed to be the cause of the abscess...Done the usual poulticing (dry-on vet/farriers advice) twice daily , antibiotics and bute. Started to heal well then seemed to stop making progress. Then noticed some heat (in nearside fore) and another area which looked suspect so pressed the heel bulb and yet again exposed another area of pus, has also broken out down the side of the frog, so have been poulticing this one too now for 3 days, still on meds.... Has anyone got any ideas as to what could be causing these abscesses? Grass seed seemed plausable in the first but in two feet surely not?? Farrier never seen abcess here (heel bulb)in foal before but vet has seen 2 in two weeks! Only change has been adding a garlic field lick but mum normally wont let her near it but is the only thing that has been added to her diet of grass/haylage/creep fed spillers stud youngstock mix... Any ideas or experience of this anyone? Please.....!!!

Never of two but my mare got one out of the blue when she was 5 months old. The next one she got was earlier this Spring (she is now 4), so never had two in a row like that. She was also only on grass and hay and occasional milk supplement (her mum was very poor when she came back from stud and Breeze needed the extra from about 4 months). they had copper licks in their field at all times but never gave them garlic. I have been very tempted to give the mares and new foals garlic licks lately though due to the flies being so awful! I hope your little one gets better soon.

Have you found the garlic licks have any effect re keeping flies off them?

Yes the saracen garlic licks make them stink but def less flies!! Got the vet coming for another look today so fingers crossed
