I had a very bad fall last week in the school, one minute I was walking on a long rein, the next I was coming round on the floor with blood pouring out of my mouth. I ended up in hospital and suffered severe concussion and several siezures. I am now recovering but still have a headache and stiff neck, I need to buy a new hat and was thinking about the gatehouse hs1, has any one got any experiance of these or any suggestions?
I have also lost my confidence and am wondering is it all worth it as I have two small children who need their mummy and seeing as my horse is a 17hh 5 yo who I am training to event the chances of having a bad fall again are quite high. I'm just not sure if I should be risking it, I didn't really worry about it before because I had a 10 yo who was perfect and hadn't fallen off him since he was 4! Any suggestions please?

HS1 is the one used by every rider at badminton because it has the highest safety rating of any hat made. that would be worth it with a spooky horse but they are pricey, around £115. is this normal for this horse and could anyone help out schooling until you have recovered?? if its common then he's probably not worth the risk to you and your kids. (sorry!)

Thankyou, he is normally excellent in the school which is why i think i fell off as I was relaxed and just walking on a free rein before starting to school him so it was completely out of the blue. He can be a little spooky out on hacks but he has only been hacking for a few months as he came from poland.

Have you got an instructor/confident friend who could come and help you school while you build your confidence back up.
Loss of confidence is horrible but can be built back up with help.
You also have the added pressure of a family who need you so take some pressure off yourself and get help, good luck

if he's normally fine then see if anyone can keep him ticking over until you have recovered as its not worth riding with a stiff neck as you just prolong the injury. having a fall that bad is pretty rare but you could wear a body protector in case as it gives a bit more protection. is he a warmblood?? they seem to see ghosts a lot if they are getting ready to school! hope to see you out eventing in the future!

Gosh soprry to hear about your fall but I can highly recommend the HS1. i need to get a new one soon actually but will def be replacing it, they are very comfy!

My instructer/friend is supposed to be riding him over the next week but I know she hasn't got round to it yet, she is busy running the yard and I think he is at the bottom of the pile.

i lost my confidence 3 yr ago a rta, i didnt ride after that, i bought my 1st horse last year but didnt regain confidence so sold her, i bought a horse that i had been riding at riding school and my confidence is slowly coming back, so confidence can and will come back, some quicker than others, i have kids and im needed like you. hope you get your confidence back soon and i know any riding is a dangerous sport but you have to think of your kids too.

I think invest in the HS1 and a body protector and if you can't get someone else to school him, stick him on the lunge for a while and just ride him for 5 or 10 minutes after lunging. Then slowly build up the riding time until you feel more confident and back to normal. I am sure you will be fine and if you still feel this way in a few months then have another think then if it is all worth it - don't make any rash decisions!

Unless you are schooling him to jump at the moment, buy an australian stock saddle.

You can only fall out of these backwards if the horse rears up and you become unshiftable. They are excellent for young horses and gaining security

I wish I had known about then when I was younger!
