Autumns mane looks a right state at the moment a) because I need to sedate her to pull it and Im leaving it until absolute last minut before we start eventing and b) her rug has rubbed the bottom bit of badly over winter and its been such a gradual process I didnt really realise how bad it was!

So, does anyone have any remedies / old wives tales to help get her mane back at the bottom asap?? Said rug has been binned into the shed but was wondering if anyone had any hints/tips?

Saw this stuff http://supremeproducts.co.uk/shop/products/Heritage-Collection-Mane-&-Tail-Builder-250ml.html and for the price of a pub lunch im considering trying it although I know it probably wont make a blind bit of difference!

I wouldn't worry too much as it will grow back over time. If it is anything like my hair it will grow like crazy with all this sun! Have you tried either a mane rake or a solo comb to 'pull' your mare's mane? my mare used to object violently to having her mane pulled but after a bit of fussing with the solo comb she would happily stand and let me get on with it.

Tried a mane rake the other year and to be honest although it thinned out nicely (which we need as she is ISH with a VERY thick mane) it left plaits etc looking absolutely awful with bits sticking out everywhere.

She goes bonkers if you try and use a solo comb although I am going to have another bash at it later on this week one day when the yard is quiet and I can keep plugging away until she realises it doesnt hurt!

I think in the past she has had a bad experience with it to be honest as I know when I bought her she went mad when you even tried to comb her mane (even though you can do absolutely anything else with her!) and so far we have found the happiest most stress free solution for me and her is to have a bit of sleepy stuff from the vet and do it that way instead.

Gutted about the rubbed out bit though - its really bad! She looks a bit like worzel gummidge with a bald spot at the moment! Poor autumn!

I have found baby oil really works beautifully, too stop rubbing and to help the hair regrow.
Along with Caffeine shampoo (cannot remember brand) it's in a black bottle?(Anyone care to help there!)
:D

I have the same problem with my mare too. It's the high neck rugs that seem to make her mane rub away to nothing. Like another poster, I also use Megatek (think it is the same bottle as the one on the link) and it does work. Defo smells good too :D

We have had the same problem this year with our Dartmoor and we started to use pig oil and sulphur with good results. She went from having a bald patch to about 2/3 inchs of mane within a few weeks. Well worth trying.

Not a remedy as such but have you thought about trying a bib? Bossy's bibs are absolutely fab and they do a full neck version too. They can go under fly rugs :) I bought one after a recommendation from someone on here and it has worked a treat.

Can you back comb the mane like you are going to pull it and instead of pulling the underside hair out, cut it off with scissors? This does actually give a similar finish minus the discomfort. X
