Advice please- new yard

Hi, I share a horse with my daughter we have had him about a year and half now at the moment he is @ a livery yard where we are happy & have plenty of help !! Here comes the good news a member of the family is just about 2 buy a small yard 5 acres &5 stables with the idea that we will move there and get some more liveries in - this to a non horsey person is not a problem but I know that @ the moment we do not know enough & I do not want to move there yet - it is a fabulous investment 4 the future @ I can't say don't do it -what would you advise - our gelding is also young so he is still learning as well - the last thing I want 2 come across as in spoilt & ungrateful I just want 2 try & do things the right way because I realize how much help & advice u need x

I would say wait until you feel ready.Running a yard is stressful at the best of times for anyone with a fair amount of knowledge.Running a yard with liveries when You haven't got the experience is probably going to put you in some very awkward or uncomfortable situations if you haven't got the knowledge to cope.

Hi thanks for your replies you have confirmed what I was already thinking I need to stay put ! And we are happy there - but what should I do about this yard ? my only other thoughts were about trying to rent it out as a whole as I said I don't want to say don't do it because it is too good to miss even though I know that it is going 2 be a load of hard work for a good few years x

work out the financial side and the payback - take into account the hours needed and I think you might well find that a small yard is not going to be a good money investment.. and that might well be a tactful way of extracting yourself too! So as well as the "obvious" things (feed, forage, bedding), think of costs for maintaining the fields (rolling, spraying) fence repair, utilities, insurance plus help.. plus any other repairs you might want - it all adds up!
